huh.

#

it

#

it deleted my

#

okay

#

here's the post i made about it on reddit a couple months ago, tldr i keep getting this error in console:
Unable to initialize sound capture. You won't be able to communicate with other players." or something along the likes of that; the voice chat and mic test both just do nothing and it's as if i don't have a microphone at all

#

i've tried a bunch of different shit to no avail

#

ignore the deltarune thing i think that was just because chapter 4 ||had a fight where you use the microphone|| (spoilers, if anyone cares for that)

lofty parrot
#

It might sound stupid, but are you sure your microphone works at all?

#

I've only seen that whenever I'm messing with the device's setup/driver

vast warren
#

Issue persists across different microphones

tame ravine
#

Happy to help diagnose if you're able to share screens.

vast warren
#

Including TF2 source mods like TF2 classic and Open Fortress

#

I haven't played CSGO in ages but I remember my mic working there while it didn't in TF2

#

How would I go about fixing my microphone drivers?

tame ravine

tame ravine
#

Can you show me a screenshot of your sound settings?

#

@vast warren

vast warren
#

Yeah sorry hold on

#

@tame ravine

tame ravine
#

Woah, you've got a load of audio devices

vast warren
#

Yeah, for voice acting purposes

tame ravine
#

Click on your Microphone.

vast warren
#

mmk

#

i think this might have been something i've already tried in the past but i dont remember

#

what next

tame ravine
#

Oh wait, sorry wrong setting. Go back to the sound menu

lofty parrot
tame ravine
#

Volume mixer is in advanced

vast warren
#

volume mixer?

#

isn't that only for output?

tame ravine
vast warren
#

they're both set to default and there are no other options

tame ravine
#

For TF2?

vast warren
#

Oh wait

#

Hold on you might be cooking

#

Let me boot the game up rn

tame ravine
#

You can try and force it to the specific mic even if it's already on default.

vast warren
#

Didn't work :(

#

Voice_Init: Using Steam voice optimal sample rate 24000 Unable to initialize sound capture. You won't be able to speak to other players.

tame ravine
#

Hmm..

vast warren
#

The issue seems to be with TF2 from what I can gather, not Windows itself

#

I'm able to record my voice/voice chat in any other game/application

tame ravine
#

Oooh, have you set your audio settings in Steam?

vast warren
#

Yup

#

Steam's mic test is working fine

#

This is exclusively a problem with TF2

#

There are two fixes that I'm aware of, either reverting the game back to 32-bit or simply factory resetting my PC entirely

#

But I don't want to do either of those for various reasons

tame ravine
#

You shouldn't need to do that

vast warren
#

Precisely

tame ravine
vast warren
#

Desktop app microphone access is on

tame ravine
#

Do you run any other background apps that could be using the mic?

winter larkBOT
#

*Do you run any

other background apps that could

be using the mic?*

vast warren
#

This is incredibly tricky

tame ravine
#

Seems to be a reoccuring solution

vast warren
#

So I should try uninstalling any apps that may have a virtual microphone?

tame ravine
#

With the amount of audio apps that you have, one may have changed how the default audio works, which is messing with the basic way TF2 audio function works.

vast warren
#

That sounds like it makes sense

#

But then how come it's only affecting tf2 and nothing else??

#

disabled and uninstalled a handful of these apps

#

fingers crossed

tame ravine
#

Does your Yeti work?

#

As in, setting that as the default mic

vast warren
#

Booted up TF2 again, nothing happened

#

Gonna set Yeti as my default and reset

#

Restart*

tame ravine
#

Just wondering if it's something to do with the HyperX software now

winter larkBOT
#

*Just wondering if

it's something to do with the

HyperX software now*

vast warren
#

Nah, the issue has persisted across microphones

tame ravine
#

Hmmm...

#

Just rereading this now.

#

Shouldn't normally be an issue

vast warren
tame ravine
#

This might actually be a TF2 bug

#

Seeing lots of people reporting it

vast warren
#

I figured that was obvious 😭

#

But then other people can use voice chat just fine

tame ravine
#

What audio programs do you have left installed?

vast warren
#

None, other than my defauls

#

Afaik

tame ravine
#

Hyper X have an audio program?

#

So like how my SteelSeries has it's own audio engine app that runs it all.

#

Could also try a different headset or audio device, if you have one.

#

Found another potential solution. You seen this one "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" apparently disabling it can resolve it.

#

Which would make sense, if another app is taking exclusive control, then TF2 is trying to use it and it's already in use, so errors

#

@vast warren

vast warren
#

Trying it out now

#

Still nothing

tame ravine
#

Ech

tame ravine
#

You restarted your pc since making these changes?

vast warren
#

Yeah

#

Lemme try again

tame ravine
#

You could go insane, uninstall all audio devices, just have your yeti and see if that works, just as a baseline.

vast warren
#

This is specifically a TF2 issue

tame ravine
#

But you've done a fresh install of TF2 right?

#

On W11 with default drivers and USB mic, there should be no issues

#

Just trying to narrow down the cause. Whilst it may be a TF2 specific issue, it may be something on the Windows side that isn't playing nicely. Could test with another source 1 game.

vast warren
#

I guess I could try reinstalling again

tame ravine
#

I'd say uninstall everything audio other than the yeti, since that should work with base drivers. If it's STILL having issues, something is very wrong with your copy of Windows.

#

Reinstalling TF2 won't make a difference.

vast warren
#

Fuuuuuuuck

#

I'm gonna have to factory reset arent i

tame ravine
#

It's getting to that point unfortunetly. When was the last time you did a full wipe?

vast warren
#

Couple months ago

#

Im just gonna go ahead and do that

tame ravine
#

Naaah I was thinking a few years

#

Standby

vast warren
#

I mean I GUESS I could just revert the game back to 32-bit

winter larkBOT
#

*I mean I GUESS I

could just revert the game back

to 32-bit*

vast warren
#

But then that will probably lead to a handful of incompatibility issues with mods and configs and whatnot

tame ravine
#

Have you done a Windows corruption check recently?

vast warren
#

Uhhhhh how do I do that?

#

I've done scans with my antivirus before but I don't think I've done a corruption check

tame ravine
#

Open CMD as admin and run the following command.

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

vast warren
#

Ohhhh that?

#

Haven't done that in a while, let me try it out

tame ravine
#

Once that is done, you can then do

sfc /scannow

vast warren
#

God I really don't know why this has to be so complicated

tame ravine
vast warren
#

Taking a hot minute

#

it appears to be stuck on 62.3%

tame ravine
#

Let it cook

vast warren
#

Still stuck

#

I think it just stopped 😭

#

Should I close it and try it again

#

@tame ravine

tame ravine
#

It shouldn't really be taking this long.. but give it a while longer.

winter larkBOT
#

*It shouldn't really

be taking this long.. but give

it a while longer.*

vast warren
#

I'm just going to try again, it shuoldn't be taking this long

tame ravine
#

Though that is a rather concerning issue, a sign of deeper corruption within the OS.

vast warren
#

At this rate I think a factory reset is in order

tame ravine
vast warren
#

Windows lets you install a fresh copy online, I'm gonna do that

tame ravine
#

Good luck

vast warren
#

That usually fixes the problem and it'll probably fix whatever might be wrong with my PC

#

Okay well first I need to just do a local reinstall

#

Then a cloud reinstall

#

Because I don't have enough space on my C drive to do a cloud install right away and idk what could possibly be taking up that much space

tame ravine
#

Download and run this. It'll give you a visual of what is taking up storage.

lofty parrot
vast warren
#

Ah shit im already in the process of resetting

#

I dont have a spare USB drive anyways unfortunately

tame ravine
#

Yeah I was going to say, full format and reinstall fresh via USB is usually the best way to go.

vast warren
#

Lost my steam authenticator

#

DOH

vast warren
#

Waiting on steam support, but I'll let you know if everything's fixed now @tame ravine

#

(most likely yes)

vast warren
#

@tame ravine Factory resetting did fix it

vast warren
#

Gotta love Windows 11

#

Such a great and stable OS that I definitely had a choice in installing
