#Mastercomfig New PC

Hi guys

So some of you know from my other posts that I've recently upgraded to a much higher end system than my previous one.

I was running an i7 8700k (stock) with a 4GB GTX 960 for years, I was using mastercomfig low to get consistently good performance.
And I've upgraded to an AMD 7800x3d with an RTX 4070.

However...because I'm on a fresh Windows install now with the new build the first thing I properly tried because I was curious was TF2 without any graphical config with all the default settings maxed out.
I still used custom interp settings and my binds etc because TF2 is shit at stock with those.
And honestly the performance has been insane, seems even TF2 benefits from the 3D V cache. Even on badly optimized maps like the Halloween ones and some moments in MvM where friends with an i9 9900k and an i5 10600k drop to 90fps at times I barely drop below 150 in the same scenarios they get those drops.

So my question is, if I ran a higher preset of mastercomfig to keep the game nice looking like mastercomfig high or something. Would I even see any performance benefits at that point?
I do plan on getting a 240-280hz monitor as I'm on 144hz currently so maybe it would help there, not sure.

I switched from low config to medium low and saw the same thing, same fps with better graphics I got a 3080ti and 12700f. However the problem with medium low for me is in big maps like swift water it just dips to 90 from 350 fps which is quite jarring

you would see performance benefits with mastercomfig high, yes

#

since mastercomfig sets a base of optimized values no matter what preset you choose

#

(although on ultra you'd likely see a performance deficit if anything)

Ok gotcha Heinz, thank you

You'll see a performance benefit over stock. However every PC sees a benefit when you lower settings.
You may get more FPS with a 7800x3D on high than you would with an 8700k on low, but it can't be guaranteed for every situation.
If you want the best compromise, you will have to decide what you want the game to look like and use the modules to tweak it that way.

Side question as well, would I lose much performance in TF2 on this PC with mastercomfig on by going to a 1440p monitor from 1080p currently? Might actually get 1440p 165hz instead of a 1080p 240hz.

you wouldn't lose any performance if you swapped to 1440p with a 4070, but if you were using high settings with a worse gpu you could see a performance deficit (low settings with a worse gpu would have little or no difference)

Definitely set textures=ultra and texture_filter=aniso16x
lod=high (small hit but worth it imo)
lighting=medium_high (helps visbility in some areas and enables essential settings)
lighting_ex=high
water=medium (for functional water visibility when fighting players)

Does medium water stop it going a solid colour at a distance? I hated that on low

no

it increases the distance, but it still goes to a solid color after a bit

You can use this to help you set your personal modules

stark onyx
#

only on water=ultra does it completely remove all fade-out

#

(also you would see a performance benefit with your specs from using low settings if that was part of your question)

There's also the thing where having shadows on at all can be a reasonable hit to performance, but high quality shadows give you some information that you wouldn't otherwise have. (That's on map makers to fix at this point but it still can affect competitive scenarios)
