#High Choke Bad Network

Do net_graph 4 in console and get a screen recording of this happening
or windows updates in the background
It won't be that. TF2 uses very little bandwidth.
windows update then
A recording will tell us a lot more, and helps give an understanding of the situation, rather than just testing one specific possibility.
Like consider that literally any downloading on the network could cause it. Not just windows updates.
damn, whole paragraph
agressive typing

I know, but still, it is part of the problem
but most reasons for choke are either wi-fi or overuse of the stack by other program
I will get a screen recording. I'm using Linux and Ethernet so nothing updating and no wifi shenanigans. I've also reached out to my ISP because it seemingly coincides with ping spikes.
I'm really trying to figure out if it is on my end or something with my apartment's equipment/connection
Ideally I would stay under 7 choke in regular games and 0 on tempus for jumping
you likely won't notice choke at around 7
anything under ~13 i'd consider that pretty minimal
*anything under
~13 i'd consider that
pretty minimal*
if it's constantly at that or frequently goes higher then that could be a point of concern in terms of how it affects your gameplay
I played for a few hours the other day but didn't have anything supermassive, but I think this still illistrates the problem
does this issue occur on community servers as well?
yes, most of my experience has been on uncletopia and tempus
what did your ISP say?
also is it your apartment's ISP or your own?
since that could coincide with other people using internet in your apartment complex
I just recently reached out again asking to send clips. I had a long long back and forth with them a few months ago where they basically ended up saying everything on their side is working as expected
It's the apartment's :/
have you found any time patterns with the lag spikes?
like at a certain hour you get them with a higher frequency?
*like at a certain
hour you get them with a
higher frequency?*
haha nice haiku
nah I haven't. I've also theorized that it happens more often with high network usage, but haven't been able to confirm it
is there any modem/router/firewall or something along your connection that you can manually reset?
Here's my cloudflare results btw. I've only run a few tests but haven't captured any issues
I believe I have this device
I haven't tried to reset it manually though, no
this is the only device actually in my apartment
you could try to reset it
alight I'll have to try that and some other stuff I thought of later tonight or tomorrow. Thanks for the advice
@molten fractal has leveled up! (1 ➜ 2)
also not sure if you care but the channel does have your name on it
*also not sure if
you care but the channel does
have your name on it*
Yeah that's your end
Rip. Cause that's just the access point. The actual router is the thing you'd want to reset.
Do you think there's anything I can adjust to make it less severe or fix it? or is it just on my isp
Do you know what your bandwidth module is set to?
I think that was default 1.5. I changed it to 6 but I think that was after that clip
Can you change it to bandwidth=762Kbps
And also add snapshot_buffer=safe
See if you can get another recording with these, and use net_graph 4, not 3.
sure. why the lower bandwidth though?
I hit a clip with that bindwidth :/ I don't think it matters at all. I was playing badwater and never saw it get above like 100kb/s unless I'm understanding something incorrectly
Also what happens if you go above you max bandwidth?
Also, does anyone have a good explanation for net_graph 4 that I send send to my ISP with the clips? All the ones I've found so far are bad and or incorrect
nm I found this page that looks good https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/TF2_Network_Graph
Okay so with better understanding of the network graph my real problem is extrapolation (the orange part that rises up from the very bottom of the netgraph) which does not always coincide with choke. that article explains it like this: If there is a large gap between packets (packet loss, server framerate too low, etc.), then the client will have insufficient data for interpolation and will start to extrapolate
I .. don't .. think that number matters too much, because the choking should prevent it getting too high.
The server skips sending you subsequent packet(s).
I ended up sending an emial to my ISP. Here's a few more clips I got https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o41RFBDkeGk
I noticed some improvement by changing my snapshot size to high. Unless anyone has other ideas I think that's all I can do on my side
How many people would be on your network? (That's the whole building btw)
There are about 300 units but idk how many people that means
There are also 2 separate building and I'm not sure if their networks are combined or separate
rip dude, at this point you need to consider switching to other isp.
and have a personal router network
@final hemlock I think they're stuck with what they have.
never say never
if not now, then in the future
Is T-Mobile or Verizon 5g home worth considering? I think that's really all I could get
don't know what are those providers, but knowm that they have some limit
limit in the amount of data, that is allowed
That's not a big deal to me. I could always swap back and forth since I'll still have to pay for the apartment internet either way. I wonder if the latency issues would be worse going with a cell provider though
Damn
even the slowest(ping and bandwidth) wifi is better, than the wifi with choke
same with fps, no lag is better that with lag but faster
Welp I ordered Tmobile internet and we'll see how it goes
mmmmmmm
i've heard/seen mixed things about phone providers' internet
although you'll be running it through ethernet rather than wifi (which most with those isps seem to do) so it might be ok
we'll just have to see, yeah
unless it's cellular internet
5G does imply cellular, yes
Actually, are you able to connect to this via ethernet?
*Actually, are you
able to connect to this
via ethernet?*
still better to have cellural than choke wifi
