This my third post about lag now. My previous system wasn't all to good for running tf2 but my connection was stable. Now, every minute I have to deal with 20 seconds of 0.5 seconds of delay between my projectile firing and my shot registering. I have gotten TCP optimizer (although I have heard most of it is a placebo), I've tried many tutorials, and even when my connection is not busy (as in I'm the only one in the house) it is still like this. I cannot use ethernet, and no matter how what I set Packet_rate, Packet_size and snapshot_buffer to, it is still prevalent.
#Lag that cannot go away

Screen record this with net_graph 4
Here is one I recorded about 1-2 months ago to see if I ever needed it. Clearly I do now. I believe it is net_graph 4. If it is I will re-record.
if it isn't*
Is that video from the same system that you are currently using?
Yes
Just to be clear, because the video doesn't demonstrate how often it can be
My ping usually spikes up to a minimum of 120
With a max of 700
I see, and packet_rate=congestion didn't help?
Looks like your command rate has lots of drops (frame rate related) does it happen often regardless of fps?
Yeah. My frames can be buttery smooth (or 60 fps bc that's smooth for me) and my connection will still be soiling itself
Packet_rate=Congestion didn't help
I don't remember what my network modules were at the time, but now it is pocket_size=large, snapshot_buffer=auto, sourcetv=off and packet_rate=standard
I'm thinking you already did troubleshooting with your wireless adapter as well?
Bandwidth is now 8.0 Mbps
And yes, I have done some troubleshooting
Driver updates, advanced settings, even adapter resets
And Windows network troubleshooter
With the mention of not using ethernet, would a powerline adapter work for you? It's a 2 piece wall socket adapter you plug into your router/gateway and pc via ethernet. It converts electrical signal to data. Quality of bandwidth depends on the wiring of the building but can generally be significantly better than an unstable wifi connection
Would be a good idea to check if hard wiring would help before doing that though. If even just for a few minutes
In my household, the router is nowhere near my system and let alone a desk of any sort
But just to be more certain, what is the exact diagnosis of my issue?
Bufferbloat, weak signal, etc
If it happens in absence of other devices and personal downloads, buffer bloat likely isn't the issue.
Seems like the connection has issues intermittently so may be weak signal. Does windows and or the router display a weak connection strength to your PC?
It shows only 3 out of 4 bars, but until a week ago where I moved my desk about 1 metre/yard and it was 4 bars I believe
You're most likely right
I'll just set packet_rate to congestion bc my framerate may be bottlenecking my update rate
Unless I find another genuine non-potato way to improve fps
And I'll set snapshot_buffer to safe for stability
As for powerline adapters, I'll look into them for the forseeable future
This probably only is because previously it met the requirements
Tldr; I will set settings which I believe favour stability over performance and will look into the powerline adapters to fix my weak signal
I like powerline over wifi. I had to use it when I had a laptop in a place that'd cause it to go between full strength and nearly dead. It seemed to work just fine even through a bunch of extension cable and a hacky outlet
@surreal cloud has leveled up! (12 ➜ 13)
Not quite as good as straight ethernet but the next best thing.
Thank you so much. You have done me such great kindness.
packet_rate=congestion
snapshot_buffer=safe
bandwidth=762Kbps
Might be helpful to do a test here too to find a better setting for bandwidth:

Screenshot the whole page once it's done, and blank out your IP and the map in the top right.
Here it is.
