I think it should be. It's kinda like math: very few people will need logarithms and integrals in life, but it's good to improve your logical thinking etc. Even though playing chess doesn't make you a genius, I think chess would help students improve their pattern recognition and logical thinking. I also think it's very possible to do, because you don't need grandmasters or even masters to teach kids and teenagers chess. For total beginners even a 1000 rated player could be a teacher. It would also make it easier for chess players to make money 😉

I think that chess should be an optional class for either A, B or C days in all schools. Why we taught fu###ng PE at school? I do not love for example, let's teach chess for buds who love it! I was really impressed when we got board in our library, and i wanted stronger opponent's than me. Because being most powerful guy at school (1000 children) while you had ~800 rapid rating isn't looking fun.

My school has a chess club but it only is for 1.5 months and you don’t learn something you just play and there is a tournament. Normally there would be a tournament between other schools but due to the optimist chess club of my city saying they will not be hosting a tournament this year, the school just does a tournament within our school and no other schools join.

The thing is, not everyone wants to learn history, or another language than English, nonetheless they still have to deal with it, so the question is more like should we force them a bit to get into Chess or should we let them take control of that choice ?

Like of course Chess isn't the most important thing in the world and so it shouldn't be taught to everyone. It's not as important as history, maths etc... however it does strengthen mental abilities such as logic, seeing opportunities, finding strategies, playing with your opponent's minds, reading patterns etc. Those skills are so important especially at a young age and Chess could be the way to teach those skills in a fun way. I think teachers could take that as a opportunity to associate board which is the fun part and mental improvement which would be the school part.

Chess definitely has its place in the school program if people would look into what this game brings to people, and how much impact does it have.
