Well chess is a sport. Straight into the evidence. First of all, the International Olympic Comitee considers it to be a sport. The oxford english dictionary considers chess a "An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment”. Chess does qualify into this category because it is an individual competing against each other for what you could easily call entertainment(or team in case of bughouse). Additionally, although it does not require physical extersion, it does require mental capacity in order to make your moves especially at the highest level. It is just like other sports like football where you form tactics to win the game. The definition of a sport has nothing to do with physical activity so therefore chess would be a sport. (Well maybe a little physical activity with GMs falling out of their chairs).
