As much as I would love for chess to be considered a sport, but by definition it is not. A sport is defined as, "An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment." Chess is very draining on the mind but does not cause physical exertion.

However, some studies show that being physically inactive weakens the brains power. And for this reason you must remain physically active in order to continue to play chess at a high level. So by definition it could be taken as physical exertion and therefore be considered a sport.

After writing this I have changed my stance. Due to the studies that show physical activity is needed I believe chess requires physical exertion to be good at it. Also, looking back I realize the movement of the pieces could be considered physical exertion that requires energy even if not much. So for the reasons listed above chess is a sport.

There is also the relatively recent subgenre of sports known as e-Sports, which can be compared to chess in many different ways. Firstly, none of the mentioned involve physical athletics but require years of practice, have strategies and concepts that one has to learn to get better at the game, has coaches and competition ranging from local to world championships just like any sport which involves physical athletics. Secondly, one can argue that the immense concentration and endurance the highest level players require is enough to say that chess requires some form of physical athletics, although it is definitely not the primary part of chess.

Although I personally believe that chess is a sport it is still necessary to listen to reasonable arguments which claim otherwise. Firstly, most definitions of sports require physical athletics to be the primary part of an activity for it to be considered a sport, which can be backed up by a quick google search of the definition of sports. Secondly, the immense concentration and endurance can be replicated with any strategy board game. I, however, think that the first counter-argument is not strong enough as a dictionary cannot be compared to the opinions of the IOC. The counter-argument on the other hand is much stronger as it directly challenges the stance the immense concentration and endurance being physical athletics. I, however, think that chess is still a legitimate sport.

Let us take for example the basic characteristics for life and a black hole (those characteristics being responding to the environment, growing and developing, producing offspring, maintaining homeostasis, having complex chemistry, and consisting of cells). These qualifications when applied to a black hole considers it 50% alive (having complex chemistry, growing and developing, responding to the environment) but even so biologists and astronomers alike would both be strongly against the idea that a black hole could be alive.
