Learn like 1 or 2 openings white and and black. For white, I recommend the Reti or London, both of them are extremely flexible. For black, the Caro-Kann has carried me from 1100-2500, but it can work for 1000 and less. It's flexible and extremely strong. When it comes to playing, take your time. A rule that I like to follow in chess is: when you see a good move, try to find a better one. Additionally, training puzzles is immensely important. I, personally, like to use Lichess for puzzles because they give great analytics and the puzzles are unlimited.
