DO NOT VOTE UNTIL THE FOLLOWING ISSUE HAS BEEN ADDRESSED
A few days ago, Julien Song accidentally moved several days before the planned start date, then accidentally withdrew, requiring chess.com moderators to intervene and reset the game. Before the game was reset, Julien Song played 1.e4, and the votes were cast accordingly, with a significant plurality of players voting for 1..e5, a clearly strong move against 1.e4.
After the game was reset, Julien Song played 1.d4, which he plays in roughly 90% of his games as white. While the game was reset, the existing ~6k votes were not reset, meaning without action from chess.com moderators to reset the vote, 1..e5 will almost certainly win even though against 1.d4 this is a clear mistake due to 2.dxe5. I have sent a message to moderators in the World Admins private channel and I urge everyone to wait for a response from chess.com, but if this illegitimate vote is allowed to stand, I encourage everyone to boycott the game in protest.
Tl;dr Technical difficulties, please stand by
Someone that speaks French please translate this
And post it on chess.com
Because the entire chat is freaking out
Someone not on the discord team translated it
It looks like d5 will win
Even if the votes were completely reset, d5 is getting more votes than any other move, including Nf6
I will provide the next vote update in about an hour, which should provide clear information
@median lark I think it is safe to vote now. Do you agree?
Oldest votes I see are 3 hours old
I mean yes it’s safe to vote, your vote will count, but the old votes are still there
We see 3 votes shown for g5 but 11 total votes
Votes for each:
e5: 70
d5: 565
e6: 112
c5: 29
Nf6: 181
c6: 39
Nc6: 55
d6: 18
g6: 22
f5: 32
b6: 9
Even without any unusual behavior, d5 would defeat Nf6 and e6 easily
I wouldn’t bother resetting the vote at this point, d5 is clearly going to pass e5 and Nf6 or e6 were never going to win anyway
Tracking the margin
Will ping when d5 takes the lead
Currently 177
137
126
Expect lead change in 15-20 minutes
<@&1377312389040443522> d5 has taken the lead. While people were allowed to re-vote, existing votes remained, causing e5 to continue to lead for some time.
For those of you who wanted to play e6, Nf6, or something else, the vote totals since votes were refreshed are roughly as follows:
d5: 50%
Nf6: 15%
e6: 10%
e5: 5%
Nc6: 5%
Others: 15%
d5 would have won by a large margin had the vote been completely reset. I see no reason to cause additional confusion by resetting the vote again when the result will be obvious. See you all on move 2.
Julien Song plays both 2.Nf3 and 2.c4

IMPORTANT MESSAGE:
Julien Song has made his intentions clear. When we play 1..d5, he will play 2.c4, expecting 2..dxc4 3.e3 b5 4.a4 c6 5.axb5 cxb5 6.Qf3 1-0. The database is clear, if 3..b5 is played, it is already too late and 4..c6 and 5..cxb5 are unstoppable. What we need is tactical voting. On move 3, 3..b5 is the most common but only has 24% of the vote. If we can agree on 3..Nf6, a solid, strong move, we can avoid Julien Song’s trap. 3..Nf6 and 3..e6 transpose after 3..Nf6 4.Bxc4 e6 and 3..e6 4.Bxc4 Nf6, but since 3..Nf6 is more popular we should try to convince people to vote for that. I understand a lot of advanced players will want to play 3..e5, but that will never win and will take votes away from 3..Nf6. If a significant fraction of 3..e6 voters agree to vote 3..Nf6, 3..b5 will be defeated and 4..e6 can be played, giving both groups what they want.
Let’s make this game last longer than 6 moves.
<@&1377312389040443522> Julien Song has played 2.c4.
Let’s proceed with our recommendation and vote for 2..e6.
Uhh, what?!
My best guess is a lot of the low Elo vote went to 2..Nf6, which is objectively terrible. 2..Nf6 took votes away from 2..dxc4, allowing us to have a decision based on support rather than avoidance. e6 will likely win, but both e6 or c6 are excellent options.
Overall, this is mostly good as we wanted to avoid 2..dxc4, but nearly 20% for 2..Nf6 is concerning
We got bailed out from playing a bad move by a bunch of low Elo players voting for an even worse move
<@&1377312389040443522> Julien Song has played 3.Nf3. Let's play 3..Nf6 according to our recommendation.
it's very early but I don't expect this to be close, what concerns me is 3..Nc6 in second
no major changes
as the vote continues, the proportion of votes for 3..Nf6 is continuing to decrease, split relatively evenly between Nc6, dxc4, and Bb4+
Please vote in the polls in #next-move-polls
CHESS.COM DISCORD SERVER OFFICIAL RECOMMENDATIONS:
If Julien Song plays 4.g3, we will play 4..Bb4+
The goal of this move is to force 5.Bd2, making white put the bishop on a square that would ideally be used by the b1 knight. After 5,Bd2, we play 5..Be7. This is marginally better than 4..Be7 despite losing a tempo.
DO NOT PLAY 5.Bd2 Bxd2+
This defeats the purpose of 4..Bb4+ instead of 4..Be7. White obtains excellent development and center control. Instead, bring the bishop back to e7 and proceed with typical development.
If Julien Song plays 4.Bg5, we will play 4..dxc4.
While 4..dxc4 is a risky move, especially after 5.e4 b5, where black attempts to hold onto the c4 pawn, the chess.com discord server believes that this is an objectively strong choice. In addition, Julien Song has played 4.Bg5 several times but has never encountered 4..dxc4.
If Julien Song plays 4.Nc3, we will play 4..Bb4.
4..Bb4 pins the c3 knight to the king. This move, known as the Ragozin, is a simple developing move. Black intends to castle soon.
If Julien Song plays 4.e3, we will play 4..Be7.
4.e3 is a relatively passive move, and Julien Song has only ever played it once, so it is unlikely to occur in this game. If Julien Song plays 4.e3, we will play the standard developing move 4..Be7 and proceed with minimal risk.
In all of these lines, do not play 4..Nc6. We recently saw many players vote for 3..Nc6, so 4..Nc6 may receive a large fraction of the vote in any of these lines. If we want to play Nc6, we need to play c5 first to avoid blocking our c-pawn.
im going to bed, i asked the chat on chess.com to translate the recommendation message into French, hopefully Julien Song doesn't move in the next 8 hours, which is unlikely based on his past performance.
<@&1377312389040443522> Julien Song has played 4.g3. Let's play 4..Bb4+ as per our recommendation and hope low Elo players don't ram through 5.Bd2 Bxd2+
yikes
okay things are looking a little bit better now
yeah okay looks like it was just unusual early voting
looks like we won't have to spam the chat telling people to vote for 4..Bb4+ to stop 4..Nc6
holding steady
Bb4+'s proportion is decreasing as more votes come in:
Good lead over second place, however
<@&1377312389040443522> 4... Bb4+ has been played (9 hours ago).
Julien's move will occur in 15 hours.
<@&1377312389040443522> Julien Song has played 5.Bd2. Let's play 5..Be7 as per our recommendation
wtf
<@&1377312389040443522>: If you have not voted yet, please vote for Be7 as per our recommendations. Unfortunately, Bxd2+, an inaccuracy, is leading by 1271 votes right now.
bruh we're cooked
<@&1377312389040443522> Bxd2+ was played 12 hours ago. This is a mistake.
We are awaiting Julien to play Nxbd2.
Julien Song has played 6.Nbxd2, 6..O-O is leading by a large margin but there is absolutely no way 7..c6 wins over 7..Nc6
Why do people keep voting for Nc6
<@&1377312389040443522>
<@&1377312389040443522> 🌎 6... O-O is now leading by a substantial margin of about 1600 votes over second place (Nc6).
If you have not voted yet, please vote O-O as per our recommendations.
Let's keep fighting to win!
No one wants to react to the message 😭
I myself voted for 6... O-O, although I must say that I was a bit put out by the voters voting for 5... Bxd2+. Even after all of the warnings by people like Lily who not only said don't play it, but gave reasons WHY it shouldn't be played, and then people just ignored the advice and voted for it anyway. At that point, I highly considered just withdrawing as this is a constant recurring problem that keeps happening in all the vote chess world matches I've played in.
<@&1377312389040443522> Julian has played 7. Bg2 two hours ago
<@&1377312389040443522> 7..Nc6 will win because the high Elo players split their votes between 7..c6, 7..b6, and 7..Nbd7. I will be stepping back in this game because there’s not much point anymore
<@&1377312389040443522> 7.. Nc6 was played 3 hours ago. This is, unfortunately, a mistake.
Julien is almost certainly going to play 8. 0-0. Please vote for your preferred response in #next-move-polls.
No one wants to react...
<@&1377312389040443522> Julian has played 8. O-O
Looks like we might have a close vote this time
Both are good
Might not actually be that close
Too early to say
898-756
<@&1377312389040443522> 8... b6 was played 3 hours ago.
<@&1377312389040443522> Julien played 9. cxd5 three hours ago. 9... exd5 is winning by a subtantial margin of 838 votes ahead of second place at the time of writing this message.
exd5 also appears to be best
<@&1377312389040443522> Julien Song has played 10.Rc1
10..Bb7 is leading by a huge margin, not surprising
Of note is that “offer draw” and “resign” are now automatically at the top, regardless of the number of votes
<@&1377312389040443522> Julien Song has played 11.Qa4
you've got to be kidding me, we're following that IHSA game I talked about earlier in #theworld-general
jesus christ this is bad
if we play Re8 i will quit
i don't know how much of this is me flooding the chat but this is good
okay i have no idea what that early vote was
percentages holding steady
im thinking there was something suspicious going on
im going to bed once the margin hits 100
208-127 now
217-132
227-132 wow
chat we did it
now i can rest
334-186
436-235
<@&1377312389040443522> For those who didn't hear, Qd6 was officially played 7 hours ago.
WHY CANT HE PLAY MOVES IN MY TIMEZONE? jk jk
<@&1377312389040443522> Julien Song has played 12.e3
I'm going to vote for Rfe8 so I can see the votes
it's probably going to win because Re8 was in second last move
oh dear
oh no
I know what's going to happen
if 12..Ne4 wins, Julien Song will play 13.Nxe4 dxe4 14.Ng5, and we will defend the pawn with 14..f5, and then lose to 15.Qc4+ Kh8 16.Nf7+ Kg8 17.Nh6+ Kh8 18.Qg8+ Rxg8 19.Nf7#
what a way to go out
Vote Rfe8 to stop Ne4
i have no idea what to do next move tho
I have no doubt people will keep trying to play Ne4
Interesting, the vote is behaving almost exactly the same as last move, with a bad move nearly leading early and then the much better move gaining significant support
This is very good for the future of this game
But all the votes for Qb4 is concerning
Qb4 Qxb4 Nxb4 Rxc7 is painfully obvious
138-85 now
Rfe8 should win now
<@&1377312389040443522> Julien Song has played 13.Rc3, 13..Ne4 has won already, it’s not even close, we are cooked
Good lord I almost pasted the wrong thing instead of the screenshot
Yeah we are cooked
Yeah gg, 13..Ne4 14.Nxe4
14..Rxe4 15.Ne5 Nxe5 16.Bxe4 dxe4 17.dxe5 Qxe5 18.Rd1 gg
14..dxe4 15.Ng5 f5 (no way we stop it) 16.Qb3+ Kh8 17.Nf7+ Kg8 18.Nh6+ Kh8 19.Qg8+ Rxg8 20.Nf7#
I mean the early votes lean towards worse moves but Ne4 is unstoppable
Ne7 might come close but I don’t see any way it wins
There will be no more recommendations for the rest of the game
Maybe there’s some crazy move instead of 15..f5 like 15..Na5 but 15..f5 will win
I’d rather have this
End the game now
Instead of making us suffer for 20+ moves like GothamChess
I’d rather see 15..f5 than 15..h6, at this point we know the game is over
Maybe we’ll find 15..Nb4
<@&1377312389040443522> Ne4 was played 11 hours ago. Fun fact: in 11 hours, you can take a full flight from Paris to Atlanta.
