Then you turn on the engine or game review and you see exactly how good were your moves, why they were bad, what other options were there and so on

So I am just wondering, would it lead to better improvement if you played Puzzle Rush Survival, but everytime you get a puzzle wrong, your friend will throw boiling hot water at you? This could possibly motivate you to not getting any puzzle wrong, and put the emphasis on the word "Survival".

Yeah that is true. But the thing is, even to find the optimal moves you'd have to skim through all the moves (naive computer solution). The standard algorithm they use however finds a way to disregards the "blatantly bad moves" and be more efficient in their search. The game tree is still very complex though.
