an opening still very much hugely contributes to that, if u stick to basic theory ull find yourself improving better

theres an opening called kadas opening beginners mistake where its basically

1 h4 d5 2 rh3 bxh3

it just immediately loses a rook, if white has just sticked into playing normal theory they probably wouldnt have had to deal with this at all, this is an extreme example of what im talking about, but the point here is that different openings making up moves and just unfamiliar positions will probably lead to blunders which u call "awful board vision", its just that ure not used to seeing these patterns because they are non existent
