First they weaken their own posiiton
Two, their attack usually isnt strong enough to hurt you

Just continue developing with 2 things in mind
stopping their attack and controlling important squares(to prevent their attack from becoming dangerous)
Trying to exploit the weaknesses in their position they made while ttacking you
