my advice
on every move look for

did he move his piece in a square where I can capture it
did the piece he moved stop defending something
did the piece he move allow me to move to that square and take space

before u move think will I remove the defense of smth being attacked, will I move my piece somewhere where it can be captured, will it be forked by a knight, will I get pinned afterwards

in general, take the open files or in endgame put ur rook against his for contest, if the 7th or 2nd rank depending on piece color not defended just slide ur rook there and defend it

don't blunder back rank mates

learn how to win king + extra pawn vs king and pawns endgame
