#What should I pay extra attention to at a project like this?

A client asked for an extra long (2,5 m) palisander veneered TV stand. Now I've never glued veneer nor have I worked with palisander.
Any advise on these issues?

  • can I do an alright glue-up with no vacuum press?
  • what type of finish should I avoid? The client wants a hard varnish. I was thinking of acrylic
  • what should I avoid using as a base this long? My options are: blockboard, particle board, plywood, MDF
  • any other things I could mess up?

I'd try to order the ply with the veneer on already, how do you plan to apply it without a press?

I was thinking of contact glue

#

Or is it called contact cement?

Palisander means rosewood, right? Please be aware that most of these species are endangered, so not surprising that it's hard to source. Use of endangered wood species is also against the spirit of the server (see rule 6).

#

Could using walnut be an alternative instead? You can get some really beautiful walnut veneers, and it should be easier to source and probably less expensive

However my main concern is still there. Is glueing veneer this long without a press a good idea?

I have done it without a press, and i was not thrilled with the result

#

its not impossible, but its challenging

#

if I were to give advice on it, I'd suggest

  1. oversize whatever veneer you use by a fair amount
  2. use a few extra sheets of ply as the "clamps" by literally just setting them on top of the veneer
  3. use hide glue in case you need to painstakingly iron out a bubble or something
#

contact cement does work, but it is a softer glue, its uber toxic, and it isnt particularly durable

Alright so I would need to come up with SOME type of press anyway. I read some opinions today and seems like the contact glue isn’t the best…

nah i mean oversized incase it shifts

Ah if I were to use contact cement?

#

Yes, definetely

#

My main concern is the veneer would come off after a few years or so…

yea I'd be concerned about that as well on a tabletop
