#How would you make this oval dowel?

I'm working to make some replacement parts for some 70s furniture, and I can't work out how to reliably make this: a kind of oval dowel with flat sides 2cm x ~1.5 (will have accurate measurements soon)

re the as far as I can tell, it's indian rosewood, which is a nightmare to get hold of now (at least in the UK), but there are enough options for alternatives.

I'm just unsure how to cut it - ideas?

No idea if this is the most efficient way, but you can do it with a round corner bit on a router table. Use featherboards to keep lateral and downwards pressure on your piece and round all corners. You just need to get the matching radius on the bit.

If I were making that, I'd round the corners off of a rectangular piece of stock with a hand plane and a spokeshave. You would be surprised at how round you can make something by putting facets on the corners and then shaving off the parts that don't feel round.

that's a loose tenon shape, superior to a dowel. neilmb is correct: you mill up a long rectangle of the desired thickness & width, roundover all 4 edges (router table ideal for this), and then cut it into pieces of the desired length

I can't tell from the pictures if it really is a loose tenon in this case, or if the entire component is just that shape

as I should have expected, my first help request in here is prompting me to buy/build new tools (a router table) 😂

my first router table was a piece of plywood with a hole in it clamped to the edge of my workbench

#

only tricky-ish part is drilling bolt holes to match your router to attach it to said plywood

would echo router as the easiest, spokeshave or plane will also totally work if you have those tools available

I'd need to buy new tools either way... so I guess I may as well do the router table 😄

hole in plywood also worked for... 5 years for me?

#

I'm now on 40$ plate in hole on plywood, its maybe 10% faster

yeah that'll definitely work for this, as I only need to make ~8 of them

...oops found a router table and some more bits that comes with my intended router upgrade for less that the router costs new
