#Sticking wood planks together

Wood glue is fine, like Titebond 1. You will need clamps. The biggest issue is actually that you'll need a way to joint the two pieces so that they are both close to perfectly flat, which is a bit of a rabbit hole
if youre doubling it up just for height it might be easier to spend a little more cash and get something thats the thickness you want to avoid the issue dolmur is referencing
Or you could screw them together from the bottom and skip the glue, which is much more forgiving on flatness. But you'll likely have visible gaps between the layers.
I think they mean they're going to do butt joints to rise it up
But maybe not, a drawing would help
I was thinking using screws as thats much easier. Why would there be visible gaps?
because your two pieces won't be perfectly flat
No i mean cut the plank it half so its 900mm long and glueing it on top of the other
Oh that's troublesome then yeah
is there a reason you need such a large monitor riser
eitherway, the bigger your joint, the more the flatness of the two pieces will reveal itself
not without solving the flatness issue
but screws and glue would mean you could skip the clamps at least 🙂
Bunnings does sell thicker project panels that would probably work?
Thanks, do you think a bit of sanding and the stain will hide where the wood planks are connecting?
I do not
Really? I couldnt find any thicker ones with the same length and width
Hm, they used to sell an okoume panel thats around 30 thick and 400dep
My max depth is 250mm though
Oh i meant to send the 235, oops
They do have a 185x30 aswell if that works
Can u sned the link for this please?
What is dar wood and is it ok to stain and varnish?
I have no idea what DAR is, but that is some type of pine
stain is kinda shit in general, but particularly shit with pine
it will apply very blotchily
what look are you trying to achieve?
Amonitor riser similar to this one (im just focused on the top rn)
No need to stain, an oil finish should do the trick
Im completely lost on what to do
Oh I have that tower, fun
I dont know if i wanna glue two pieces together or not cause idk if it will look good
Buying one piece that is already of proper thickness will make things much easier
There is a lot less to go wrong
You can see the problem with your original idea if you can go in person and see if you can find two planks that can be laid on each other without a gap along their length on both sides. You'll find that it's going to be very difficult if not impossible.
Is there one of this but 200mm instead of 140??
@south urchin i am thinking of using this wood and cutting off two 100mm pieces and using them as legs. I have a couple of questions.
Will a handsaw be able to cut through this?
What grit sandpaper should i use to touch up the rough end?
I am thinking of painting the legs black - would acrylic paint work and would this look good?
Thanks
Ignore the planning lol
Handsaw, yes sure. I'm not sure what you mean by "touch up rough end". If you're talking about the end you cut, you won't want to sand that as it'll likely just round it off. Practice sawing on scraps until you can confidently saw fairly straight.
I don't do much painting so I can't confidently answer your other question, but as with anything relating to finishing, I recommend testing it on scrap of the same material to understand the process and see if you like the result
