#Sticking wood planks together

I want to cut this in half and glue one piece on top of the other. How do you guys suggest i do this? Would a simple wood glue be ok and leave it to dry for a couple of days or would i need clamps? Would i need a specific wood glue? Will it look good? This is for a monitor riser btw

#

Im also planning on staining it and finishing it

Wood glue is fine, like Titebond 1. You will need clamps. The biggest issue is actually that you'll need a way to joint the two pieces so that they are both close to perfectly flat, which is a bit of a rabbit hole

if youre doubling it up just for height it might be easier to spend a little more cash and get something thats the thickness you want to avoid the issue dolmur is referencing

Or you could screw them together from the bottom and skip the glue, which is much more forgiving on flatness. But you'll likely have visible gaps between the layers.

I think they mean they're going to do butt joints to rise it up

#

But maybe not, a drawing would help

because your two pieces won't be perfectly flat

Oh that's troublesome then yeah

is there a reason you need such a large monitor riser

Its gonna run along the back of my desk

Would a mixture of glue and screws work

eitherway, the bigger your joint, the more the flatness of the two pieces will reveal itself

south urchin

but screws and glue would mean you could skip the clamps at least 🙂

I have no idea what DAR is, but that is some type of pine

south urchin
#

stain is kinda shit in general, but particularly shit with pine

#

it will apply very blotchily

#

what look are you trying to achieve?

No need to stain, an oil finish should do the trick

Oh I have that tower, fun

#

I dont know if i wanna glue two pieces together or not cause idk if it will look good

gentle thunder

Buying one piece that is already of proper thickness will make things much easier

#

There is a lot less to go wrong

#

You can see the problem with your original idea if you can go in person and see if you can find two planks that can be laid on each other without a gap along their length on both sides. You'll find that it's going to be very difficult if not impossible.

@south urchin i am thinking of using this wood and cutting off two 100mm pieces and using them as legs. I have a couple of questions.
Will a handsaw be able to cut through this?
What grit sandpaper should i use to touch up the rough end?
I am thinking of painting the legs black - would acrylic paint work and would this look good?
Thanks

#

Ignore the planning lol

Handsaw, yes sure. I'm not sure what you mean by "touch up rough end". If you're talking about the end you cut, you won't want to sand that as it'll likely just round it off. Practice sawing on scraps until you can confidently saw fairly straight.

#

I don't do much painting so I can't confidently answer your other question, but as with anything relating to finishing, I recommend testing it on scrap of the same material to understand the process and see if you like the result

does it need to be thick? for looks I get it, but for functionality 19mm should be enough

#

unless of course you're going to have 2 x 19" CRTs on it or something
