Hey all! Sorry I never really post in here except when I need help with something (here I am again), I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for getting this hex head holding my electric hand planer blade out. I'm assuming the blade is hardened steel because I thought about just Dremeling the whole thing since the Dremel wheel won't fit in there obviously. It's an old Rockwell if that makes any difference. My dad just gave it to me so I figured I'd see if I can make it usable once the blade is done. Thanks for any insight!

"bolt extractor"

Ok awesome, thanks! Does this just go into the head of the bolt? Like it won't go deep enough to destroy the thread of the shaft holding it?

#

Ok thanks! I'm actually not sure of the threading haha, I was only trying to turn it counterclockwise

#

I do have a Torx bit

#

Ah ok, will it destroy the shaft the bolt is in as well? Sorry I don't even know the proper terminology haha

#

I'm assuming the bolt is threaded into a shaft the blade rotates around, not threaded into the blade itself? Although I don't know for sure

#

Oh yeah definitely, I was just worried about salvaging whatever shaft it's in

#

Oh ok awesome! Holy crap I may finally have use for the tap I bought like a year ago for a different project that didn't pan out! Haha

#

Thanks, that puts my mind at ease for that!

#

Yeah true

You could also try to wrap heavy duty foil around your hex bit.

Ok, I'll give that one a shot first, then the Torx bit, then the screw extractor as a last resort haha. Thank you guys so much for the advice! I'll report back what works!

#

Yeaaaaah good call, thank you. Is there a way besides an owner's manual to determine that?

#

Oh dang, you're right!

I just had a thought (thinking out loud), I have a tap set. Could I tap the head and basically just keep turning it clockwise until it hits the bottom of the hole for the bolt head, which would eventually be spinning it in the right direction to remove a reverse threaded bolt?
Sorry for the moderate necro, I haven't even had time to get a sledge to hammer in the Torx bit so thinking of what I already have first :S

#

Ahhh ok fair enough, thanks! I was under the impression the tap would be a more durable thing, so there goes that thinking haha. Thanks! Back to the original plan

Oh ok amazing, thanks!

And once you get the hang of using one your life will change forever. At work I don’t even use bits anymore, I just pop the ez out in the drill and go about my day

Ok last question, I think. I'm a bit confused. Wouldn't this be the one I'd want for removing a left hand thread? It says for right hand thread direction but if it's supposed to screw in, wouldn't it basically be opposite?

That will loosen a screw clockwise. If your bolt will loosen from spinning clockwise that is correct. It basically bites into the screw and twists until the force of cutting threads overcomes the force of the seized bolt

dawn badger
#

Ok perfect. I'm going to strongly assume based on what Elodie said that it's left hand (reverse) thread. Just to give credit where it's due, the logic makes sense haha. Just wanted to make sure beforehand, it seems like the buying page is worded backwards. Thanks!

Yeah. I might just call them

#

Also the replacement parts manual should have that bolt listed, and it should indicate thread direction

dawn badger
#

Ok cool, I'm not crazy haha. Also, it's an ancient Rockwell and I'm sure my dad's thrown out the manual by now

supple kettle

You’ve only got one go with the extractor, you could snap the bolt or destroy the threads if you’re tightening it with that much force so make sure your you know for sure which way it spins

I've tried searching the internet to no avail. I might reach out to some potential kind soul selling one if they have the manual and wouldn't mind sharing the page hahaha

dawn badger
#

Yeah this is going to be my first try. Sorry for all the useless chatter, I'm a little nervous hahaha

#

I appreciate you folks a ton! Thanks for talking me through this, I went from knowing zero to having a decent understanding

They have manuals for everything, if you still have the nameplate with ID number you’ll be able to find it in a few minutes

dawn badger
#

Thanks, I had no luck there. This thing is likely super obsolete haha

#

I'll keep scouring around anyways though

supple kettle
#

Do you have the nameplate?

dawn badger
#

I'm not trying or expecting anyone to do the work for me haha, that's why I haven't really gone into at length detail

#

I reached out to someone who has one for sale on eBay though, albeit a different serial number

Can’t be stuck if it’s liquid

#

(More seriously, do get it hot before you try any other methods. Heat makes everything expand, so it’ll loosen off and be easier to extract)

#

How hot depends on what you think will damage the planer otherwise
