Looking to build a few chairs out of wood. I have seen some people use douglas fir for some outdoor chairs? Would that work out well for a long term outdoor piece? It seems to be not too much more than "construction or framing lumber".

Would cedar be significantly better, or would oak be the best to use? If i use cedar would I need to seal it in any way?

I am trying to find a middle ground of cost and quality.

Cedar is what I would think of as the middle ground. It will survive just fine uncoated but it will gray very quickly.

White oak is maybe more durable uncoated, but not hugely so.

What would be the best to coat it with? Is cedar good too stain?

Cedar (and all woods IMO) looks best as itself rather than stained. If you want it to be a different color, paint is by far the easiest and most durable outdoor wood finish.

If you want a clear finish, there are various outdoor varnishes. I don't have any direct experiences.

Waterlox marine is very good

Or Epifanes/Latonkinois if you're not in the US.
