#Plane Blade Questions

Hey - those in #hand-tool-techniques may have seen my previous posts, but essential info:

I have a bronze LN 4. Worked great for a dozen sessions or so, then randomly while planing two sessions ago I felt like I wasn't getting good cuts or the blade wasn't adjusting correctly. The last time I uses it the blade was retracting after a few passes. I tried to adjust the lever cap, and after taking the blade out, inspecting it and playing with the distance between the CB and blade, I could no longer get the LC to stay down it would just pop up, and was incredibly easy to push down when I did get it to stay.

After talking to a lot of you, I decided to buy a new blade and chip breaker and threw the old blade and chip breaker on CIHI to recover some of the money. Several people there Dm'd me to tell me that prior to 1998, LN used a more curved CB with no etching and they claimed mine matches it. I looked up pictures and it appears it could be true. My main concern is to not spend the money on a new blade and CB if I then have the same issue.

Sorry for the book, but if anyone has any insight please throw it my way!

Relevant posts: below is a video of my plane with the issue and some pics of the blade

#

And finally, what pics I could find of an example of an older LN, which aren't very telling

#

Last image is someone who found an old LN 4 iron and this was the chip breaker and blade installed

Plausible, before even my time

You might consider trying the blade and cb you ordered (without sharpening or anything) to see if it solves the problem, and if not, returning it

unborn badger
#

Yeah, unfortunately I already put this blade up for auction because I wasn't planning on spending the money on the blade and thought we'll if I can recoup some of it, not a complete loss. I also assume the redesigned CB is an improvement so I may as well have it I guess.

#

Well, I guess worst case I have to get a new lever cap after. Should have just bought new.

steep rapids
#

its a headache and sucks, but itll work out, im confident

vivid fern
#

as I said before, the cb alone doesn't explain your caps behavior

steep rapids
#

and i wouldn’t discount LN changing the design because of a flaw

vivid fern
#

the cap has no idea how thick your cb is

#

(mechanically)

steep rapids
#

if i recall correctly, stephen had the locking screw down as far as it would go to get the cap iron to even engage

#

so it cares a little bit in that it may not be snugging to the cb

Have we verified the threads on the body/screw aren't messed up, stopping it prematurely?

steep rapids
#

no, good point

vivid fern
#

my point is that the 1/16" difference of thickness wouldn't be the problem, it certainly might be a parallel issue and I also thought he'd be hosed

#

but I don't think it was connected to the cap issue

Dirty, but doesn't appear stripped.

#

Finger tightening it, it has even pressure through almost the entire frog except at the very end it might be a bit easier to turn, but I did pay attention to the screw when the blade was acting funky and it never turned

#

What else can I show that could help?

unborn badger
#

I emailed LN as well, though I doubt they'll get back to me.

#

I just want to woodwork 😢

I would be very surprised if they don't get back to yoy

#

Try calling as well. Their customer service is supposed to be superb

vivid fern
#

It’s completely outstanding

#

And they will definitely respond

unborn badger
#

Yeah, they're only m-f sadly so I'll have to wait and by then my impatience will have lost me the OG blade which like whatever I'll live

#

I've adjusted everything adjustable I think there must jsut be something wrong. I do not think I have anything set wrong

vivid fern
#

The upgrade cb has value

unborn badger
#

That's fine, I am not a collector who needs to hoard a blade because it's old I'd prefer to have whatever works best

vivid fern
#

I’d cancel the auction until you hear, 2 days would mean nothing there

unborn badger
#

Thanks for spending so much time helping me

vivid fern
#

Some idiot collector may pay extra for vintage LN

unborn badger
vivid fern
#

How are you not allowed to cancel it

#

Did you list it with the mafia

unborn badger
#

Lol no, but the group rules state I have to have permission to cancel the auction and I am a rule follower. I made the dumb decision so it's my consequence to bear.

#

There isn't a rule against bidding on my own blade though...

vivid fern
#

I will bid on it and win it

#

Then I’ll never pay you because I’m a jerk

#

Is this eBay? Or some other auction thing?

#

"group rules" makes it sound like a... local facebook woodworking group?

unborn badger
#

Can I Have It, it's a Facebook group where people auction off occasionally good and mostly terrible condition hand tools

#

I have gotten a few things off it, some were even worth the money. I have sold on there a bit, and occasionally people buy things for weird amounts of money.

#

QP would be very angry looking at it

#

People are bidding over retail price for my currently available new chisels and I don't know why

#

Legit though, if I can get a collector to pay around the price of my new blade for this blade I'll call that a fucking win and sell it no skin off my back

vivid fern
#

Im happy to help if needed

steep rapids
#

yeah theyll kick you if you retract an auction

unborn badger
#

Yeah, let's just hope some fools pay enough to pay for my new blade, then it'll be fine by me.

steep rapids
#

plenty of “collectors” in that group for sure

#

you’ll likely end up ahead

#

I think it's the chipbreaker. If the front edge of the cap iron is interacting with the curve it changes the effective angle of the cap iron

#

I'll wager with the new CB this problem evaporates.

unborn badger
#

I hope so. Why would it suddenly start though? It wasn't a problem for a while
