Hi! Need your wisdom again as i am not sure!
Got order for medival training-wooden-sabre.
Blade:
Was thinking about cutting thin (~3mm) wooden slats(?strips?).
Then gluing them together for strength.
Handle:
I will carve 2 elements from oak;
•Guard
•Hilt

Then guard will slide on a hilt and lock then blade from softer lighter wood (larch?) Go inside a hilt and lock.

Then soft material that have no slack will be slid on the blade (to not hurt new recriuts to much)

Will work? What do you think?

is this meant for sparring or just solo drills?

I decided to make laminate with each layer having reversed grain.
Then carve channel in middle of a blade to insert a rope all around "hitting" surface.
Then with shower curtain material (to reduce air resistance) with wool under, sew all around to make rope not fall off a channel

i'd need a picture of that to see what you mean about the rope and the shower curtain material

Rope all around a blade, to hit people with something softer than wood

heady charm
#

ok so you're wrapping the rope around the blade like a pell?

are the people wearing hand protection or are they using bare hands?

#

because even with what you described I would be against it, especially with no hard gloves

#

I think that if it's for just solo drills or slow pair drilling it would work, but anything other than that would be about the same as a synthetic sword, and should be treated accordingly

#

you also need a solution for the tip to keep thrusts safe

well yeah, you have a bunch of foam there

#

but if you're just wrapping wood with what looks like 1/2" rope and a couple layers of cloth, you are definitely going to be breaking a finger or two if you get hit on the hand

jade lake
#

Do you have any suggestion for better suppression?

heady charm
#

maybe if you use a high density foam instead of rope you might have more compression

#

and have the blade be pretty thick so you don't have as much force concentrated on an edge

#

maybe eva foam or something

jade lake
#

Will look into it and test, thanks 🙂

heady charm
#

put a layer of eva foam, then wrap on top with rope

#

something like that might work better

Will you have a heavy pommel to balance out the rope?

#

Seconding Sleep with EVA rather than rope. Rope barely compresses at all, it's not going to afford much if anything in the way of pain reduction 😄

#

If you go wood-eva-rope it might be too thick. Maybe a bamboo/fibreglass core?

^essentially how cosplay/nerf weapons are made

sweet crescent
#

Basically yeah!

jade lake

I went with layers of pipe foam and fabric cover around the blade, will balance blade Balance with Lead inserts in the Handle

I've whacked plenty of people with a bamboo staff and it's lasted 20 years - it is admittedly quick thick, though 😄

That's true, the shield part will murder the edge instantly. Have you ever tried wrapping a wooden blade in fibreglass?

jade lake
#

Never, sound expensive tho :p

how is training with wooden sabres helpful, doesn't the weight difference cause muscle memory issues compared to real sabres

sweet crescent
#

Hence the balance question, you have to get it bob on otherwise you're all over the boat

#

Lot of metal Dao/Jian are shite for balance, too.

Or doing dumb stuff like murder stroke on the edge of a piece of metal
