Trying to design a shelving unit for my desks, just finished up the design of the add-ons in Shapr3D but I need some help from more experienced woodworkers on if there are things I looked over. For reference the modelled board size is 1-inch thick

1" of what type material?
particle board most likely
Screw n glue or somethin else?
yeah
hm
maybe i should look into plywood as well
but i need that smooth white finish
Just asking cuz particle board doesn't like screws in the "endgrain." You could drill for shelf support pegs where you need it...
Also this corner
Yeah im trying to think about what to do with that
You could box it in underneath and call it a "feature" haha
Figure out your fastening method, and resolve the support for that corner and you look good to go. I like the design!
Hows this?
Glad i didn't bother drawing that on mobile haha exactly what I was gonna suggest for the corner
All of that is particle board?
idk, i dont have any source of material rn but my boss uses PB for all his shelves so i thought itd work
Like all this is PB
Cabinets is one thing, floating shelves are another. If you made a backer out of something thin and nailed it a bunch, I think you'd prevent a lot of rocking putting strain on your fasteners
The issue comes to horizontal load, notice how there are no horizontal spans in your photo
Maybe put a horizontal span at the back of the shelves?
But i mean like
My desks are fine and theyre made out of a composite board
With no spans
What material would you suggest?
Plywood
How pricey do you think inch thick plywood would be?
Well that would be overkill of the highest order
3/4 if it’s bearing substantial loads or needs to be very rigid
Hm, alright, ill adjust measurements to compensate for that then
ill go to a hardware store later this week and see what material i could work with
If your boss allows, ask if you can order Melamine as an add-on to his regular orders from the supplier.
Using Melamine boards from Home Depot, I just finished building alcove units for my sister on both sides of the fireplace.
For the top on the cabinets, I doubled up the 5/8” Melamine boards for extra strength when someone decides to stand on it to reach the upper shelves.
Previously, it was empty space.
I used The Sagulator and realized a 54” span might sag a wee bit over time. Even with hardwood edging.
Check your design on the Sagulator at https://woodbin.com/calcs/sagulator/
I did some reasearch and realize that he calls melamine boards "particle board" and I can understand where he was coming from but got confusing
You can build your desk with Knockdown Fasteners — IKEA style.
Those fasteners help to make rigid connections in Melamine boards.
Also, try to use coarse threaded screws in particle board type of materials. Confirmat is one brand name.
PVA glue won’t work on those slick surfaces. Get Titebond Melamine Glue if you are doing glueup.
