#Best practice for Remarkable Paper Pro app installation?

#

hi, just recieved my remarkable paper pro and I want to install obsidian on it! What is the best way for going about this? I do not see any discussion of toltec etc being used on RPP.

olive seal
#

toltec has yet to be ported to the lastest version on rM1/2, let alone the major difference with the system on the Pro

#

also, one of the things holding it back is the lack of an easy way to access the framebuffer for external "apps"

#

these "apps" aren't the usual linux ones you can just run on the rM

although someone has gotten a debian chroot working previously on the rM2, it still requires a software version where we can use rm2fb to access the framebuffer

#

tl;dr, not yet, and don't expect it to be similar to Desktop Linux

green sphinx
#

I see

#

Are there any alternative applications / "hacks" possible on RPP?

olive seal
#

it's been about a month since the Pro has released

Only "hacks" have been getting BT to work and connected keyboards with it, or through an OTG adapter+USB Y Splitter

we are poking through and finding ways to connect to the display, and have made some findings

green sphinx
#

okay cool thanks

#

will follow this

olive seal
green sphinx
#

Nah i was like i want a remarkable

#

And then i went to the site and bought the latest one

#

Heard about it from friends over past few years

#

is dualbooting hard?

olive seal
#

huh, alright
Currently, the rM2 would be a better fit for toltec stuff, assuming you are fine with either dual-booting or using a version of the OS unsupported by rM

And since you said obsidian.....hmmm....I guess you could have a terminal(YAFT) on the device with the Type Folio to type, but that limits the type of things you can input

olive seal
#

although it is doable

though the "dual booting" here is still their OS, just different versions of it

#

so, you can't just install a rando linux ISO and have it work

#

especially due to nuances with the hardware used, such as the Pen input, E Ink Gallery 3 display, FPGA on board, drivers, etc

green sphinx
#

I've become increasingly a fan of e-ink devices. bought a boox palma which will replace my phone, but the refresh rate isn't too good

which is why i bought the remarkable since it seems to have by far the best e-ink screen that i've seen. inlcuding the daybreak or whatever which i ordered

#

but i've been quite disapointted with the text editing capability, especially since it should be good given there's a keyboard

green sphinx
olive seal
olive seal
#

not even close

green sphinx
#

I thought it was when i ordered Laugh

olive seal
olive seal
green sphinx
#

Wasn't clear when I bought it given the keyboard is half the price of the tablet

olive seal
#

guess you didn't research hard enough before buying ¯_(ツ)_/¯

green sphinx
#

Indeed

#

Do you know why remarkables e-ink is better than eveyrone elses and its not even close

olive seal
#

for colour specifically?

#

or in general

green sphinx
#

in general

olive seal
#

lots of R&D, a somewhat stubborn attitude to get things done their way, and direct partnership with E Ink, the company designing and producing the screens

#

Boox on the one hand, feel compelled to release new hardware hilariously quickly to jump on the latest advancement

#

reMarkable spent a ton of time to slowly mature the hardware

#

SuperNote is in the same camp, but they seem to have stuck with B/W for now

#

Colour ain't easy to nail

And I can understand why they chose to name it the Pro and not the 3

Cause it doesn't replace the 2, but in a way, compliments it?

2 for people who care about size, lightness, screen contrast

Pro for bigger, faster, colour

green sphinx
#

I see

#

Thanks

#

Okay i might return the pro and get the 2

#

Don't really care about color

#

DYT the 2 will be able to run obsidian ?

olive seal
#

(correct me if I'm wrong, but is it not an electron app?)

green sphinx
#

Ah yea it is

#

:

#

😦

#

Really my goal is to edit documents that are also in my obsidian sync

olive seal
#

good luck running it on a device with 1GB of RAM XD

#

best you could try is VNC

#

but that needs another device =P

green sphinx
#

Yea..

#

Maybe i will write something that just copies docs back and forth between obsidian and remarkable

green sphinx
olive seal
#

the original rM 1 was made with their stubbornness to get it working with E Ink

and they did. 50ms of latency for writing was unheard of in the E Ink landscape back in those days

#

and now, we have 12ms on the Pro, which is a colour device

green sphinx
#

If e-ink owns all the screens and sells them, why is remarkable so much better than everyone else

olive seal
#

most other vendors just buy off the shelf parts, ish

#

very few make custom screens

dapper wasp
#

I blame the king of norway

olive seal
#

another example is the Kindle Scribe

dapper wasp
#

personally its a grudge. you can blame most everything on him

olive seal
#

it was the only 300PPI E Ink device at its size

green sphinx
#

so kindle and remarkable are working with e-ink to make custom stuff that they don't sell publicly

olive seal
green sphinx
#

cool

#

how do you know so much about e-ink and remarkable 🙂

olive seal
#

nerd! xD

#

have owned one for almost 2 years

#

recently got the Pro, selling the 2

olive seal
#

a lot of which I'd actually never buy

#

and some videos that I watch again

green sphinx
#

Nice

#

What do you use it for?

#

What are your thoughts on daylight

olive seal
#

my Pro?
Pure notetaking for University, some drawing, and journaling with TODO stuff as well

Lots of reading too

#

I also like to mess around with tech
just soft-bricked my Pro like 2 hours ago xD

green sphinx
#

Do you export your journaling anywhere else or is it all on the remarkable

olive seal
#

also, price is a tad steep

green sphinx
#

Yea I’m confused why they’ve been working on it for 5 years

olive seal
green sphinx
#

When there’s like hundreds of these companies that have similar devices

olive seal
#

I just have my phone, laptop, rM

and the laptop is usually at home, and I just remote into it through my Meta Quest 3/phone

green sphinx
#

Attacking remarkable in what way?

olive seal
#

basically that

green sphinx
#

Kind of yea

olive seal
green sphinx
#

Haha nice

#

Do you work with the quest 3

olive seal
#

very rarely do I need to use a Windows PC in person

Worst case, I can borrow one from the library, or use the labs

olive seal
#

heck, I have the rM app sideloaded, so I can refer to my notes

green sphinx
#

Any issues with eye strain for doing that for long periods of time ?

olive seal
#

my rM is, in a way, the blackhole for all my University stuff

Slides, Notes, assignments, timetables, everything on one device

olive seal
green sphinx
#

Might have to try this

# green sphinx Do you know why remarkables e-ink is better than eveyrone elses and its not even...

Yes because they invented the segment (barring some nerd saying "technically 20 years ago Sony did XY and Z) they quite literally were first to market. Back in 2016 the Remarkable WAS the E ink device. Then others came into the game like boox to run off the success of the remarkable and it's much easier for them to package an android tablet than do what remarkable has done which is reductionist theory.

You put a clock on the remarkable, and it's user base would be upset, to give you an idea if how minimalist the device is intended for.

Have you see their viral video from years ago? You maybe have and didn't realize it was this company who actually made that video.

frozen crypt
#

This video has like 100 mil views across social media

#

This, is what the remarkable was designed for.

frozen crypt
# green sphinx Thanks

Even a clock on a device steals our attention. So the android e inks and the remarkable are two totally different products, and when you get outside the fact that Youtube reviewers just simply need content, they cannot in anyway be compared.

People pay more for the RM because it does less. The Boox, when j first opened it had 64 apps to update.... Each of these is a distraction. The remarkable is built entirely to end distraction.

The boox 10c ultra is fantastic device, no question! I love it's ability to "link" so you can hyperlink any sentence or word in any document typed or written and the hyperlink can be Web page, another note of yours, it even a specific page in a different pdf... This is a wild functionality for threading ideas together in a vast network and something only an android e ink can do.

However, when I'm with my remarkable, I'm truly present. Just me and the page and nothing else going on.

The color is best in market, and the writing feel is also best class by far IMO. They simply are different products. I genuinely get into flow with my remarkable, and get distracted by my boox.

#

👉 The RM2 is smaller, and doesn't have a front light just heads up. But it's fantastic as well

green sphinx
#

Appreciate the perspective 😊

#

Going to keep the pro and just write some syncing mechanism between my obsidian vault and remarkable sync

frozen crypt
#

I share your love for E ink

#

It really is a fantastic tech

#

Merging nature and tech in a good way

green sphinx
#

I didn’t even notice remarkable doesn’t have a clock lol

frozen crypt
green sphinx
#

I’m huge black and white pilled now

#

Even my iPhone is on black and white

frozen crypt
#

Whoa your phone looks like an e ink phone haha

#

I love that

olive seal
#

because it is?

green sphinx
olive seal
#

I mean, technically not a "phone"

green sphinx
#

Boox palma

frozen crypt
#

Oh okay haha

green sphinx
#

iPhone took the photo

frozen crypt
#

Ahhh

green sphinx
#

But it’s black and white too

frozen crypt
#

Wow I didn't realize boox has a smartphone. Can it go in Verizon?

olive seal
frozen crypt
#

Okay but can it game?

#

🤣

olive seal
green sphinx
#

Theoretically

frozen crypt
#

Well if it has E sim

green sphinx
#

Pretty sure it does

olive seal
#

doesn't.

frozen crypt
#

My Verizon phones all have E sim, none have slots

olive seal
#

confident it doesn't

#

bet ya $2 on it

green sphinx
#

Oh nvm

#

It does not

frozen crypt
#

Ah yes it doesn't have cellular capabilities I see

green sphinx
#

There’s something on the side that looks like a sim

olive seal
#

microSD

frozen crypt
#

Super cool though wow a pocket boox

olive seal
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

frozen crypt
#

Fuck guys, I need it now

#

Brb

#

Does it have pen

#

To write on it with

olive seal
#

I would like to do the usual
👉🏽 Boox no follow GPL shenanigans once more

# green sphinx wdyt about quest 3 v. quest pro v. quest 3s

Quest Pro if and only if you really really really need Face/Eye Tracking and QLED

Everything else about is not great. Resolution, SoC, refresh rate, Passthrough

Quest 3 is the best bang for the buck headset. Pancake lenses, pretty high resolution, better SoC, more RAM than 2(but less than Pro)

Quest 3s is the middle child between 2 and 3. More or less refreshed displays/lenses(fresnel) from the 2, but with 3’s SoC(think iPhone SE)
