The screen works - says it's powered off, and directs me to hold the power button to get started. But no matter which buttons I hold, for any length of time, the device is totally unresponsive.
It's also unresponsible when plugged into power. No reaction at all from it, no matter what I do.

Whoops. Never mind. After trying almost every combination of buttons, apparently I had missed one. I held down the right most button at the bottom of the tablet, and then held down the power button. Not at the same time, first one then the other.

The comment that the screen works doesn't really mean much here, the screen uses no power to be in whatever the last state it was in. It sounds like your device has no charge. You will need to charge it for several hours before it has enough charge to do anything.
