Context:
There exist many ladders/chutes in L1-3 that until now haven't been removed by mods. However, I've heard they will be. Having no reusable infrastructure to descend will likely mean L1-3 will start containing more scaffolding blocks left by those who descend, like cobble, cluttering (and imo deteriorating) the view and playing experience.
Suggestion:
Have some sort of rope/abseiling equipment that you can mount to a block and use to descend at max N blocks (say, 20 or so) somewhat quickly. Controls could be: shift to descend, space to ascend, right-click to dismount rope from the block it's attached to (causing the player to fall if they're not on ground already).
This is similar but different from the current climb mechanic in a few ways:
- players could be but don't need to be hugging a wall to descend (very useful in places like the inverted forest or the goblets, see screenshot #3)
- it's faster (experienced abseilers are able to descend quite rapidly)
- it's more similar to how delvers do it in the series (see screenshot #1 and #2)
If implemented well, this mechanic could make descends more fun and immersive, as well as need much less scaffolding. As a bonus, given more seasoned players (with better armor) can survive larger drops, the speed of one's descend scales with one's "level". If abseiling is fast enough with good armor, experienced players may not even want to build ladders/chutes anymore.
Note:
I don't know if this is even feasible, as I'm not a dev. I'm just throwing this idea out there, and I'm interested to hear your opinions.
