#Abseiling rope to descend as alternative for block scaffolding

Context:
There exist many ladders/chutes in L1-3 that until now haven't been removed by mods. However, I've heard they will be. Having no reusable infrastructure to descend will likely mean L1-3 will start containing more scaffolding blocks left by those who descend, like cobble, cluttering (and imo deteriorating) the view and playing experience.

Suggestion:
Have some sort of rope/abseiling equipment that you can mount to a block and use to descend at max N blocks (say, 20 or so) somewhat quickly. Controls could be: shift to descend, space to ascend, right-click to dismount rope from the block it's attached to (causing the player to fall if they're not on ground already).

This is similar but different from the current climb mechanic in a few ways:

  • players could be but don't need to be hugging a wall to descend (very useful in places like the inverted forest or the goblets, see screenshot #3)
  • it's faster (experienced abseilers are able to descend quite rapidly)
  • it's more similar to how delvers do it in the series (see screenshot #1 and #2)

If implemented well, this mechanic could make descends more fun and immersive, as well as need much less scaffolding. As a bonus, given more seasoned players (with better armor) can survive larger drops, the speed of one's descend scales with one's "level". If abseiling is fast enough with good armor, experienced players may not even want to build ladders/chutes anymore.

Note:
I don't know if this is even feasible, as I'm not a dev. I'm just throwing this idea out there, and I'm interested to hear your opinions.

i think the idea of adding some kind of temporary cobblestone block is being discussed

If they like having more (and more diverse) ideas initially before choosing what they think is best, this is just an idea I'd like to bring into the discussion.

I come to the same idea! I’d also suggest giving the rope tool a max length or limited durability, so it can’t be abused for infinite descents. And it could also have a dripstone-like property — if the top segment breaks, the entire rope falls down together. That might keep it balanced and realistic! I really want it in gameEyEkO

Is there any future plan on this?

Holy throwback. This post is 1.5 years old. There is a full plan for this feature yeah. But there is a lot of stuff with higher priority that deserves the devs' attention more before we start working on this. Unless @gloomy vale would like something fun to work on in his spare time pepelaugh

played this recently which was really good

This is the demo version of our survival-climber Cairn. You play as Aava attempting your first ascent before heading to mount Kami. After a warm-up in the climbing gym, you climb to the summit of Mount Tenzen. You have full freedom to explore the small mountain ridge, forage, bivouac, and improve your technique in a low-pressure environment.…

We already have something pretty cool for climbing up though
