vale vapor
#

ever so slightly?

#

LOL

#

It's pretty hard to hear what's going on in the intro, it's pretty cluttered and the drums are muffled overall

#

Drums also sound offbeat

#

Are you placing them on grid?

formal hedge
vale vapor
#

You gotta make sure youir drums are actually on the grid

#

Do you hear that they aren't hitting on the right times?

#

Can you send a screenshot of the midi editor i'm curious

formal hedge
#

Not the whole thing but this should help

vale vapor
#

Oh yeah it's way off especially at the end

#

Do you have snap turned on?

#

you see all those vertical lines? ALL your drum beats should be spot on those

These aren't even on the lines at all

vale vapor
formal hedge
vale vapor
#

😭

#

i love spectresound but he has some boomer takes

#

What you should be doing is placing the drums on the grid using snap, then you can go back and manually humanize the hits with "H"

vale vapor
#

that way, the hits actually stay on beat relative to eachother

#

and don't just shift off over time

formal hedge
#

This sounding better? Fixed drums and lowered impacts some to lighten the intro's "clutter"

formal hedge
#

Like it reminds me of a Cervini mix kinda

#

Which I really don't want

vale vapor
#

What?

#

I don't think this in any way sounds like a cervini mix LOL

For mixing you want open back

Otherwise just get IEMs

balmy forum
halcyon holly
#

How do I put this

Imagine putting your ears in an acoustically compromised tin can and mixing on that

timber forum
#

I understand but we are talking sub $100 lmao

halcyon holly
#

Essentially any closed back is not a good solution

halcyon holly

#

Or if you can find HD560s, get those

Those are like £80-100 here

balmy forum
halcyon holly
#

They’re just so…mediocre

#

Any closed back ain’t a good choice for mixing

#

For tracking yes

#

But when it comes down to it either open back or monitors

timber forum
#

There’s quite a few open back options for my price point .. you’re just saying they wouldn’t be as good as some iems?

halcyon holly
#

Which options

#

Truth of the situation rn is closed backs up to Ā£200 can’t compete with Ā£20 IEMs

#

It’s like, Neumann u87 vs KSM32

#

Both are great. One isn’t for its price

timber forum
#

These seem popular .. would I just get a 1/4in jack adapter for the focusrite?

halcyon holly

Cool, so what’s the main difference with these? Never thought of using iems.. I figured they wouldn’t be good for mixing at all

where do you load it, the og NAM or the wavemind version of NAM?

formal hedge

Ik that's not the usual but I prefer the simplicity of NAM over NAMU

vale vapor
#

NAMU you can load on the group

#

It has true stereo processing

#

NAM og doesn't

#

Also NAMU isn't complicated, its the exact same stuff, it just has optional extras

You don't need to turn on the other modules

timber forum
#

How to I fix the ducking? Never had this problem before

balmy forum
#

are you compressing your drum bus?

#

@timber forum

timber forum
#

Yes. Unfortunately this version of deviant doesn’t have multiout routing. So most of the mix is inside the plugin itself. But it has so compressor

balmy forum
#

yeah your gonna need to multi route

#

are you sre youcant multi?

timber forum
#

Yeah it’s not in the free version of deviant 2

#

I’m eventually gonna buy the full version but I wanted to test this out

balmy forum

follow this, tell me if you have any issues c:

timber forum
#

No bro I’m deadass, deviant took out multi routing in the free version lol. Unless you are saying there is a way to bypass that

Would a multiband compressor reduce the ducking? I wanna do everything I can with this free one for now until I get the money

Oh okay, I’ll look into it

#

restrains kit is my personal fav, and i have not tried ssd yet but alot of the people on here go crazy about it

timber forum
#

Yeah. I just really like these drums. I’ve hardly had to do anything to them to make them sound decent. There’s gotta be a way I can minimize the ducking. Not really looking for a studio mix right this moment

balmy forum
#

just ease on the compression

#

make sure you start multi routing asap pls tho

#

it will change your mixes for the better

#

me before multi route LOl

timber forum
#

I do multi route on ggd. The problem was invasion was a hellish kit to mix when you are a beginner like me. I’ll be getting the full version to multi route before I release anything

balmy forum
#

up to you

timber forum
#

I might, I have no problem spending the money to get the exact sound I want. Ggd never achieved that

balmy forum
#

stay away from waves

timber forum

Oh trust I’m not made of money lmao

The last thing I bought was invasion when it first came out. It’s time for an upgrade. Atleast a more user/beginner friendly one

karmic plinth

Quite literally the only reason I haven't used it is I

  1. just only heard of it recently
2)I already had Ozeon 12 EQ
  2. I have TOO many plugins in my computer and don't know how to find and delete them haha
vale vapor

or minus the steinberg part

karmic plinth

karmic plinth

I don't think they take up too much space anyway so its not really storage issue, more of just trying to filter through them in my DAW thats a pain in the ass ha

timber forum
#

Is this better than my current mixes then? Cause I don’t wanna be going backwards lmaooo

#

Which is crazy cause there’s like no processing on anything in these. I had literally no clue what an ir was. I was just using out the box bias fx tones and ggd raw

vale vapor
#

The guitar tone is a bit better

#

I also think your drum processing on the newer mixes is a bit overkill

#

You're in the beginner arc everyone has where you overcompensate at first LOL

timber forum
#

Yup šŸ˜‚

#

I’m getting better results now that I’m using less and less effects and trying to get a better source first.

I mean it sounds fine without it but I've found that 10% or so more transient helps it stand out in the mix more

I also guarantee you aren't hearing that transient shaper through an amp

Left and right guitars are routed to the bus though?

I’m confused lol

I can just throw both di tracks in a folder and all processing on the folder

Wouldn’t the guitar bus just go to the master track anyways if it’s routed to it

yes

karmic plinth

Rhythm R & Rhythm L > Rhythm Bus - Added FX for Track here
Lead and Harmony (ior Lead L and Lead R if you fancy) to Lead Bus - Added FX for Track here

Rhythm Bus > Master Guitar Bus
Lead Bus > Master Guitar Bus

  • Add Wide Band compression to the AMster Guitar Bus

Master guitar Bus > Mast Project Bus

timber forum
#

So I’m going it right then yeah? Lol

karmic plinth
#

This is my set up, the Master Guitar bus was at Xenons Rec and I noticed a huge difference

timber forum
#

That’s a lot of busses haha but yeah I get it

karmic plinth
#

I thought so too, but Honetly, It means I'm doing less lol

#

At first it seems alot but when it comes to Mixing I have found it significantly easier

timber forum
#

My guitar bus just has eq and multiband comp, my tracks within the buss have my gate, tube, amp

#

That’s just how I saw other people on YouTube set it up haha

vale vapor
#

it doesnt really matter as long as you're able to have an easy time processing everything

#

that's all that matters

#

that it sounds good and it isnt a pain to process

timber forum
#

Yeah I found it much easier then before when I didn’t know about busses, I would just process my seperate guitar tracks and I realized that was so wrong

karmic plinth
vale vapor
#

Hmm

#

As long as it's a different part, that's ok

karmic plinth
#

I know it sounds weird, but the Chorus to my song has three rhythms

#

ONe on Left, One on Right and the Centre basically just "Bossts" the bass with the chugs

vale vapor
#

mmmmmmmmm

karmic plinth
#

I got the Idea from Through Struggle as they do 3 x Guitars in some "Chuggy" parts

vale vapor
#

I wouldn't recommend that

#

introducing more than 2 of the same part tracks causes weird phase issues and sounds cluttered

karmic plinth
#

eh it works and it's turned right down

vale vapor
#

Unless you're editing them incredible tightly, there's no reason to do it as it eats up all your headroom and the pick attacks won't perfeclty line up

timber forum
#

If quad tracking is this right?
Left and right guitars double tracked with full tone
An additional left and right with a different tone but just blended in ?

karmic plinth
#

Yeah I don't do it often, I just thought I'd try it and it worked,
The version I've been posting here has 4 guitar parts in it
Rhythm L, Rhythm R, Rhythm C and Lead

vale vapor
#

Anything more than 2 tracks (L and R) of the same part is too much

#

I don't know why quad tracking is such a pervasive myth in the production space

timber forum
#

Yeah never tried it just curious

karmic plinth
#

Oh I should prefice that my 3 rhtyhm part all "slightly" differ

vale vapor
#

It just sounds bad, and almost none of your favorite records actually use proper quad tracking

#

The only type of triple or quad tracking you should do is when each pair plays a different part

#

That way it's more "wall of sound" and it doesn't matter if the pick attacks line up or not

timber forum
#

Like whitechapel haha

vale vapor
#

Yeee

karmic plinth
#

But yeah otherwise, I normally wouldn't Triple or Quadtrack because it can definitely mud it up

vale vapor
#

Obviously there are outliers, if you're trying to make drone music or something experimental, do whatever you want

karmic plinth
#

But also Centre Guitar can be if you're doing some kidn of weird edited intro

vale vapor
#

True

karmic plinth
trail bane

jus a lil demo. Working with entirely free plugins, a minimal knowledge of mixing, and passion. It obv just finishes at the end suddenly cuz it aint done

karmic plinth

vale vapor
trail bane
vale vapor
#

All free plugins is the method

karmic plinth
#

I really like this, but yeah could be a bit beefier but I think it sounds great

trail bane
#

but im also ass at making tones

vale vapor
#

I mean the whole mix!

#

Tone sounds pretty good

#

Whole mix could use more compression

trail bane
#

ah true

vale vapor
#

Also i think the cymbals might be panned incorrectly, they sound narrow

#

Make sure your overheads are panned left and right

trail bane
#

havnt really gotten past simple EQs in the mixing as of now

trail bane
#

cant control individual parts

#

i dont think

#

wait

karmic plinth
#

I know some here recommend SSD.5 Free

#

I've tried it a little but haven't been happy with the outcomes so far and always end up back at Addictive drums

vale vapor
#

me, ssd5.5 free is great

vale vapor
#

that way you can manually control it all

vale vapor
trail bane
#

im using Krimh Drums free edition with Kontakt

karmic plinth
trail bane
#

wait theres a "crash left" and a "crash right" but I dont know if it means it panning wise or literally wise

karmic plinth
trail bane
#

those crashes

karmic plinth
trail bane

yeah the mixer requires the paid version

trail bane
#

peak

karmic plinth
#

Oh man, I literally never play with velocitys, I'm almost always at 100% because I just don't know where I wouild lower it

vale vapor
#

Velocities are so easy

#

1 sec

#

lemme type it

trail bane
#

ive changed my velocities, idk if they any good tho

trail bane
vale vapor
#

if you want a natural sound:

  • keep most hits at like 118-120
  • first kick of every bar should be at 127
  • most snare hits should be 120-127 (except fills and rolls)
  • First tom hit in a fill should be 127, roll off velocity very slightly after the first hit of the fill

If you want a modern/punchy sound

  • all kicks 127
  • all snares 127 except fills and rolls
  • all toms 127 except fills and rolls
#

Velocities are super super easy lol

trail bane
#

oh damn so i SHOULD be moving my velociities up

timber forum
#

Just try and think about a real drummer is what I do. If it’s a 4 on the floor beat he probably could hit them all at 100% . But if he’s doing fills, blast beats and fast shit he will never hit them 100%

vale vapor
#

SPOT ON

#

Four on the floor is always 127 no matter what LOL

#

unless you have a terrible drummer

trail bane
#

my blast beats are just 100 on first kick and the rest like 70-80ish

vale vapor
#

or are imitating a terrible drummer

vale vapor
#

that is low

#

I mean if it's a blast that makes sense though

trail bane
#

yeah i thought so

#

the long-ish blasts in my beat are all like that

vale vapor
#

I usually keep snares in my blast beat at like 40-50 and the kicks at like 60 except 127 on the first kick

#

first hits should almost ALWAYS be 127

#

there's no reason why a drummer wouldn't be able to do that

#

realistically

trail bane
#

i lowkey thought 100 was like 100% and 127 was like BOOSTING it harder than it should go

timber forum
#

Blast beat kick I keep around 100, snare about 60-80 depending. Triggers do exist with kicks so not so unrealistic

karmic plinth
#

127 Got it

#

I always thought 100 was more human esque

trail bane
#

^^

karmic plinth
#

But I'm also new to this and dunno what I'm really doing

trail bane
#

I need to like

#

fix my daw

#

make buses and shit

karmic plinth
#

Do it

trail bane
#

I been freestyling it, it would make any producer cry

vale vapor
#

127 is the max

#

there's no boosting midi

vale vapor
#

Humans can hit drums at 127 lol

#

also the difference between 100 and 127 is GIGANTIC

trail bane
#

guess which ones which 🤣

karmic plinth
vale vapor
#

100 is basically a medium hit

karmic plinth
vale vapor
trail bane
#

I do it for the memes

karmic plinth
#

Like I might have alot of unnecessary track but I just delete them if I don't use them,

#

Like having one set up for Cleans, then one set up for Acoustic guitars, even if I don't usethem, I'd rather NOT have to set them up ha

karmic plinth
# vale vapor 100 is basically a medium hit

Okay, Watch this space then, I'll update my track and repost once I've fxed the drum velocities and panning

But also, I'm going to Track Vocals this weekend, hopefully I can get it to a point I can master it

trail bane
vale vapor
trail bane
#

cant figure it out

#

still cant make the difference between head voice and falsetto

vale vapor
vale vapor
trail bane
vale vapor
#

Yes

#

they are

karmic plinth
#

I think I sing in a blend of Billie Joe from Green Day and Ben Burnley of Breaking Benjamin

vale vapor
#

Falsetto is the technical name for "head voice"

#

it's the same function

karmic plinth
#

Somewhere around there, I'm not a "high" singer

vale vapor
#

Your voice only has two registers:
M1 and M2

M1 is chest voice, thick true fold mass
M2 is head voice, aka falsetto, thin true fold mass

vale vapor
#

It's the same register

#

(technically yeah there's M0.5 which is fry register blah blah)

trail bane
#

oh yeah the same register, but still different things

vale vapor
#

Only difference is chord closure

karmic plinth
#

I did know this actually, I just am not trained, and taught myself to sing to Disney music and 90's boy bands, and screaming to things like Slipknot and stuff haha

vale vapor
#

but they are the same thing

trail bane
#

I can only fry scream

karmic plinth
#

So I can pull off the more poppy music but can sound like I want to rip ya throat out haha

trail bane
#

none of the methods for false chords have worked for me

karmic plinth
trail bane
#

I end up just mongolian throat singing

trail bane
#

fry screaming is the easiet

#

so probably that

karmic plinth
trail bane
#

i have no recordings of mine

#

I tried doing vocals on one of my demos

#

but I hated my voice

vale vapor
#

heres some of my higher singing

karmic plinth

The one i just pinged is me

vale vapor

i'm the one singing "are you listening" and then i sing everything after the scream (the other vocalist is my friend michael)

So wow its been 6 years 😭

i unlocked mixed voice somewhere around year 2 or 3

trail bane

ive always liked singing

vale vapor
trail bane

you can unlock it faster

it took me about 2 weeks to get a half decent fry scream
