#Guitars & Bass

dry parrot
#

yeah

#

i mean what else can u do

#

you're tuning your guitar to the low string on the bass i think

#

on a 4 string at least

#

just dont bother with bass ig

#

your guitar is bass

shut meadow
#

exceopt the guitar tone in all recordings is like 60% bass

dry parrot
#

something u could try is keeping the bass standard, so its the same pitch as the guitar

#

because it still covers difference frequencies in the mix

#

different

#

but idk you probably just have to find a spare bridge cable for a string and tune down

storm mulch
#

Tbh I don’t think you’ll even be able to hear bass anyways so don’t worry about it

#

Your guitar will probably do the job for you

wind mauve
#

don’t listen to the guys saying not to add bass

#

bass covers a very different frequency range in songs and even if you don’t necessarily “hear” it you will absolutely hear its absence

toxic wharf
#

Who in their right mind would leave bass out

#

Animals as Leaders

wind mauve
#

question for the true believers in here

#

i was looking at some seymour duncan pickups that are active pickups, but they have a passive mounting option

#

and for some reason that's the only option that isn't elaborated on

#

i'm assuming i'd want passive mounting cause my guitar came with passive pickups?

The only songs I've heard from them is What the Dead Men Say, and In Waves. The latter I didn't care for lol.

#

And I think one other song....

#

Can't remember tho.

Are rubber strap locks any good?

Might have to get a new strap

toxic wharf
#

Well I’m wondering if a rubber strap lock would save me from getting a new strap

#

The more I play with EZD3 in different mixes I have the more I like it.

#

Especially compared to 2.

#

I forgot how easy EZD is to use over Kontakt libraries.

#

Or at least over GGD.

toxic wharf
wind mauve
#

i gave it a go myself

#

and it definitely has better sounds

#

so i combo'd it with the GGD P5 kit and it works pretty well overall

#

pearl reference kicks, periphery cymbals, and the significantly better-sounding snare and toms from EZD3

open fjord
wind mauve
#

this goes more into the category of that meme about guitar players and adding scrongle to their tones

#

no the GGD stuff i find sounds very high quality for what it is but with a very fixed sound. even if you go into the settings and change stuff like the snare top, snare bottom, kick in, kick out, tuning, mics, you'll never really change the sound

#

the EZD3 stuff, at least in the demo, all have very different sounds that can be more easily modified it seems altho the tuning setting in there is fucking useless

dry parrot
#

whats a good string gauge for drop g on bass

#

can anyone give recs of reliable brands or whatever

#

ik ernie ball exists but idk if they have stuff thats as good for drop tuning

dry parrot
#

oh alr

high tangle
#

Mostly for drop tuning I'd get something with thicker lower strings

dry parrot
#

what do u know thats good for drop g, which is a standard but with top string down a step

#

well yeah but what specific gauge would u guess is good

#

rn i still have the stock ones

#

and i cant droptune at all or its all flubby

high tangle
#

4 or 5 string?

#

Cause if it's 4 string I might recommend getting 110

dry parrot
#

5

#

but looking back on it it should have saved my money and got a 4 string anyways

#

i dont use the top string at all

high tangle
dry parrot
#

u think those are good for a full step down

#

and then 2 steps down on the top string

high tangle
#

For drop g yeah

dry parrot
#

alr ill prob go with those then

#

ty for the help

high tangle
#

Thicker strings are better for lower tunings

dry parrot
#

yeah ik

#

but its how thick to the tuning i was trying to figure out

#

i use power slinkies for half step down on one of my normal guitars

#

and then the beefy ones for drop c

#

for my current 7 string i think i gave up on searching and took a normal 8 string pack and just dropped the top string

#

or no it was the skinny top heavy bottom

#

i took the top one from that and from there dropped all the strings, the old b string became e and so on

#

my 7 string is a mess lol

high tangle
#

For drop c I still just use regular ernie ball strings

dry parrot
#

oh

#

for me it feels too loose

#

i like to feel some resistance when im playing but thats personal preference

high tangle
#

Easier bends tho

dry parrot
#

yeah ig

high tangle
#

It also helps with the higher end of the guitar

#

I'd say use regular strings for as low as drop b, unless 7 string probably drop g

#

Then from there use thicker gauge strings

dry parrot
#

i didnt do drums, clearly, im looking for suggestions on bass and guitar tone

#

skip to around 30 seconds

#

the rest is the intro that i havent completed

high tangle
#

The bass sounds pretty good

#

The guitar might need a little more cleaning up but it's also pretty good

dry parrot
#

yeah im amazed at this free bass amp

#

its professional quality

#

for the guitar ill find a better amp

#

im using a mediocre 5150 copy

#

and then just eq that ive tweaked by ear

#

oh and also this could be important

#

im using a compressor

#

its called an sa76 i think

#

but that one costs money

#

but u could go without

graceful socket
thick oxide
#

what kinda picks do you people use?

wind mauve
#

ernie ball prodigy

#

a lot of folks use jazz iiis

#

or something like that

thick oxide
#

i use red jazz iiis too

wind mauve
#

i dont think i've seen jazz iiis at my guitar shop

#

but i will check next time i go

thick oxide
#

yeah they are cool im gonna try something different next time so im gonna try those next

wind mauve
#

the ernie ball picks are really thick

#

with a rounded edge

#

excellent for tremolo picking

dire kayak
#

ny go to is the petrucci jazz 3s which are jazz 3s but bigger

#

ill also use a variety of others depending on what I'm playing

thick oxide
#

i like small picks for alternate/economy picking

dire kayak
#

the small jazz 3s are ok, but theyre super tiny

#

i have a tendency to not leave enough pick because my thumb covers it

#

i also like the dunlop flow picks for everything when i can't find my favorite picks

#

theyre also good for bass

dire kayak
dire kayak
thick oxide
#

yeah i havent used anything but jazz iiis since day one so im just looking to try new things

dire kayak
#

and anything else that catches your eye, picks are really entirely a preference thing

#

which u learn through trial and error

thick oxide
#

okay i will do that also i need help with finding my next amp

dire kayak

wind mauve

unkempt folio
toxic wharf

#

Even a bit on the pricey side for a European here.

#

But dont know the prices in Aussieland

unkempt folio
wind mauve

yeah it's like $200 cheaper in CAD

toxic wharf

Except for that Floyd.

unkempt folio

toxic wharf

Wouldnt buy any guitar under 1500 with a floyd myself

wind mauve

yeah floyds aren't ideal for beginners

toxic wharf

You can still buy it

#

And block it

#

And get it over with

unkempt folio
wind mauve
#

what i will say is my current and most recent guitar is a jackson and it's incredible

#

well worth the price

wind mauve

ye it just makes string changes and tuning different

#

i've never owned one myself

#

so i can't really speak to that

unkempt folio
wind mauve

well there you go

im all for making choices n stuff, but as of rn the guitar you've chosen i wouldnt really choose for metalcore or anything high gain

this would be more my pick, this fgn has a second switch that turns the humbucker into a single coil

dry parrot

i know tele's are good for high gain at the neck

strats could also be

but maybe its in a different place

how does gojira do their scrapes

i figured out my own way that sounds cool which is the 3.2 fret natural harmonic

celest acorn
#

hello guys

#

ive got a question about 7 string guitars

toxic wharf
#

Yessss?

celest acorn
#

would it be possible for me to tune a b standard 7 string to a drop a# on the lowest string

#

so the tuning is fast and all that

toxic wharf
#

Uhhhh yes

#

Wdym would it be possible?

celest acorn
#

like from beadgbe to a#fa#d#gc

#

because i was worried that the low e string would get really tight

toxic wharf
#

Nah. It’s the high e you should be worried about

#

When I tune that low on my 7 string and then tune back up the high e usually breaks

celest acorn
#

ah yeah

#

but if i dont change the tuning on the high e it would all be fine right

toxic wharf
#

So you want the guitar to be drop a# only?

celest acorn
#

yep

#

like a drop a# 6 string with an extra e string

toxic wharf
#

Then yeah go for it

#

But

#

Trivium is fun to play

celest acorn
#

trivium is in b standard?

toxic wharf
#

Yeah

#

Some of their 7 string stuff at least

celest acorn
#

i might also play some dream theater

toxic wharf
#

Most of Shogun and the crusade is in B standard

#

The newer stuff is In a# standard

celest acorn
#

thats cool

#

but i dont listen to a lot of metalcore

#

mostly death metal stuff

#

and prog

#

but i like aild

#

so maybe ill try them later

toxic wharf
celest acorn
#

hell yeah

toxic wharf
#

They are in drop G 7 string

#

Same with Whitechapel I think

celest acorn
#

but i dont really hear the riffs on a lorna shore song

#

its mostly austins double pedal

toxic wharf
#

Hmm really?

celest acorn
#

i havent really heard whitechapel

#

yeahh

toxic wharf
#

Lorna have some siiiiick riffs

#

So fun to play

celest acorn
#

my 7 string is coming in january next year

#

so ive got a lot of time to practice some riffs

toxic wharf
#

Nice! Which guitar is it?

celest acorn
#

its a custom made in ambarawa, indonesia

#

i took the body of a kiesel type x and added local boutique pickups and a hardtail headless bridge

#

like this

toxic wharf
#

Woahh

#

That’s nice

celest acorn
#

thanks haha

#

i was torn between a strandberg shape and the type x

toxic wharf
#

I have this one

celest acorn
#

but in the end i chose the type x cus it looks metal as fuck

#

thats a nice one

#

is that a fishman?

toxic wharf
#

Fish man pickups yea

#

It’s Matt heafy signature guitar

#

The best thing ever

celest acorn
#

ahhh

#

you must be a big trivium fan

#

they actually came to indonesia last year

toxic wharf
#

Yes I am!! They are tied for my favourite band

#

I can’t choose between 4 bands lol

#

Trivium, slipknot, bmth, architects

toxic wharf
celest acorn
#

my top 4 would probably be cattle decapitation, megadeth, lamb of god, in flames

toxic wharf
#

Nice!! I love all of them

celest acorn
celest acorn
#

i really regret not seeing in flames earlier this year

toxic wharf
celest acorn
#

have you heard the name freedom of fear?

#

i saw them earlier this month and theyre fucking amazing

#

tech death kinda stuff

toxic wharf
wind mauve
#

my crackpot theory is trivium stuff is in a# instead of a because they still have that contract with gibson/epiphone and matt uses his signature model live and it's 25.5" so it can't actually go to a

#

honestly as enamoured as i was with it the first time i played it, playing it after getting that multiscale jackson got me like 🥴

wind mauve
#

cause there ain't aren't none

toxic wharf
wind mauve
#

closest thing we're getting to nu-metal trivium

#

but yeah also trivium 7-string riffs in B standard can be played in A standard they'll just sound more evil

dire kayak
#

im angry

apparently i cant play bass the traditional way because my wrist wont bend enough

ive dislocated it and broken my armcabd fractured it so its at a point where it wont flex more than like 45 deg

maybe if i break it again they can set it to fix it

celest acorn
#

does anyone here has experience on pedal troubleshooting

#

my wah pedal is not working for some reason

#

tried swaping the dpdt for a 3pdt switch but its still the same

dire kayak
#

common issues are also with the potentiometer on the sliding thingy

celest acorn
#

at first it was working

#

and i maybe stomped too hard and broke the switch or so i thought

#

so i opened it and swapped the switch

#

still not working

#

only sound coming out is static

#

and it doesnt bypass

dire kayak
#

oh

#

nvm its not power

#

its probably guitar inputs those jacks will wear out with enough time

celest acorn
#

okay then

#

how much miliamps do these pedals draw

dire kayak
celest acorn
#

if power is the issue i could use another power supply

dire kayak
dire kayak
#

check guitar inputs

celest acorn
#

ill update you later

dire kayak
#

alright

#

my guess is guitar inputs

#

happebed with my gio guitar

celest acorn
#

if thats the case then all i had to do is connect them again right?

dire kayak
#

spent over a hundred replacing pickups before realizing i needed a new input jack

dire kayak
celest acorn
#

ah ive got plenty of them

dire kayak
#

ok ill explain the issue in guessing

celest acorn
#

i make pedals in my spare time

dire kayak
#

the pin that connects to the back part of the cable is used so much it gets pushed aside

#

eventually to the point of not working

#

or

#

the part i think is grounding is effectively sanded down over time so the cable doesnt make enough contact with the sleeve of the jack

#

for my gio i just took the jack from some spare guitar parts and it worked fine

#

and i had upgraded pickups because i thought those were the issue in the first place

celest acorn
#

ok so i cant sleep

#

so ill try to open this up

dire kayak
#

now i have a gio guitar that sounds like a million bucks

dire kayak
#

if u have a multimeter just do that

#

touch the tip of the cable as well as wherever the tip goes in the jack

#

where it leads to i mean

celest acorn
#

yeah yeah

#

ok i think i found the problem

#

the cable that connects from the board to the switch wasnt connected properly

#

i think i need to resolder

#

oh

#

its not

#

it was a cold solder joint on the ground

#

youre right

#

holy shit

dire kayak
#

what can i say, just basic troubleshooting

#

although when youve been working on something for a while it helps to bring in someone else, you might miss an obvious solution they can help with

#

have fun playing Metallica solos now

celest acorn
#

okay

#

soo now bypass is working

#

but when i engage its silent

dire kayak
#

welp

#

now you could be getting into power issues

#

obviously first check the power from the jack

celest acorn
#

it should read 9 volts right

dire kayak
#

yeah i think pedals are 9v

#

idk how many milliamps though, aby power supply should worm

#

i think i use 9v 500mA and it works

celest acorn
#

i use a daisy chain though for 8 pedals

#

i think its eating the amps a bit too much

#

ok so i tried it with another power supply and it still doesnt work

#

fuck then

smoky widget
#

Is in unconventional for the bass to play chords? (Not just the root note)

celest acorn
#

single strum chords yeah

#

but arpeggio no

#

because it will mudden up the mix

smoky widget
#

In certain situations could it work?

#

For instance, I wrote a riff for guitar that is a kind of arpeggiated chords, but also has a melody. The problem is that it sounds kind of empty alone, like how a guitar solo without chords in the background sounds empty. I wrote for the bass to play the chords and it somewhat fixed the issue

#

I can send the riff if it would help

primal parrot
#

Is the squire classic vibe telecaster baritone good for some drop E chugs?

#

dire kayak
primal parrot

But like tele single coils

dire kayak
primal parrot

maybe a good tone will make up for the single coils

dire kayak

graceful socket
graceful socket
# brazen ridge So do you think I should get it?

Depends on what you´re looking for. All I can say is that I really like the feel of mine, their signature Solar pickups sound great and it´s everything you could want from a mid-price range guitar.

But then again, it depends on what you´re looking for

brazen ridge
#

I want a 7 string that sounds heavy

#

Seems like this will work right. And I love bright colors

graceful socket
#

yeah, it can do that, easy.
Question is how low you want to tune because that could cause issues but not necessarily. I´ve got my 26.5" 7 set up in Drop E (which is abysmally low) and it works just fine for my taste, though that´s then again preference of how tight you like the tension to be. It certainly has some slight issues with holding such a low tuning but everything up to Drop G# you can do without any issues.
Additionally, a lot of heaviness is in the tone (if not most tbh)

brazen ridge
#

The lowest I normally go is Drop G# rarely will I go to Drop E

graceful socket
#

Then you should have no issues with tuning

brazen ridge
#

I think this guitar will be just perfect for me.

hoary vector
#

anyone had experience with dimarzio dreamcatcher/rainmaker set? been planning to change the seymour duncan hyperions from my ibanez az as i want more tighter sound.

gritty garden
# brazen ridge So do you think I should get it?

Only you can decide that. And in most cases when people ask for recommendations in here and already provide a couple, they're only seeking confirmation bias as they've pretty much made up their mind.

An alternative I do is leave the decision to chance, so flip a coin/roll a dice. heads/evens option 1, tails/odds option 2. If it lands on option 1 and I feel regret saddened by it, then I know I should go with option 2. If I felt no regret or happy about it landing on 1 then I'd go with my first choice.

#

Also good tip, if you're using all your savings to buy this then don't. Make sure you have at least double the amount (I prefer triple as an extra buffer) in savings. That way it doesn't feel like you're blowing all your savings on it and less pressure on the purchase. You also protect yourself long term should something go wrong with it or another issue pops up you still have money aside to deal with it instead of zeroing out your savings.

Okay guys I got a question

#

For at least guitars meant for distortion. What’s the difference between studio settings and live settings?

#

How does it sound different

#

?

toxic wharf
# wide fossil How does it sound different

What do you mean by that question? A studio is a highly controlled environment. You dont only have control over your recording environment (room, amount of people therein, and so forth) but you also have control in the post recording process

#

Live this goes all out of the window. You have some control over your EQ but other than that theres a lot of uncontrolleable variables that will influence the sound. Experienced touring musicians will be able to adapt to this

wide fossil
open fjord
# wide fossil I mean, I’ve heard that a lot of bands have a studio setting for their guitars w...

Depends on the amp. A lot of it has to do with the bass and the relationship between the guitars and bass live vs in the studio. Usually in the studio, because the guitars will be processed anyways, you can mess with the guitar amp how you want until you find THAT sound. The processing will then enhance it. For live, because you're pushing a real guitar and bass amp you have to work with your bassist more on levels, EQ, and even your fx so that that nothing overlaps (or at least try the best you can) because you can't don't have the luxuries you have in the studio. It's even harder with two guitarists who use two different amps and cabs or modeler settings. Hence why soundcheck exists.

#

A teacher of mine said a good mix, both studio and live, is what separates the big bands from the smaller ones. Unless you're into punk in which case it doesn't matter lol.

But if he’s going for something darker then a Strat isn’t optimal

The middle and bridge pickups sounds way tooo tubular to be used for and darker rhythm tones

Yea that's why I said preference not sure what he going for. But i like a dark humbucker with a mesa amp to make it sound tight, crunchy, and fat

Look those up. They have two coils squished into one small one that is meant to fit in Stratocasters, but instead of having individual magnets (because it’s hard to fit enough for a dual coil) there is one rail magnet layer across the bar

Perfect for high gain stuff

#

And you can drop it in a Strat just fine

Also idk if you have your pickups set like this, but you should have it in the bridge position and not the neck if you want a drop c sound

If he had a humbucker instead of single coils he'd be halfway there.

open fjord
#

Theirs single coil sized humbuckers.

near forge
#

Their design is quite different from other guitar, in that there is a huge cavity cut out bellow the pickups which is covered by a pick guard

#

Acting almost like a semi hollow body, contributing to a brighter sound

hoary vector

I like no pickguard just aesthetically looks better to me

open fjord
near forge
#

I’ve noticed quirks in Stratocasters like extra resonance and brighter sound because of that huge cavity

near forge
#

And aesthetically I like them more

hoary vector
#

if the strat has the cavity space and he wants a humbucker and doesnt mind having to spend more to also get a new pickguard he can do that. but hot rail is more cost efficient in this case

near forge
#

You can get cheap arctec rails and that outclass a lot of high end ones

#

Or are at least on par
