#Mods seem to be corrupting Saves for LE3

Hello, I've recently finished LE2 and used the mod manager to play with several mods with barley any issues at all. I am now trying to continue that same playthrough into ME3 but I'm unfortunately having a game breaking issue. When ever I start a new game in ME3 if I have any mods active at all it seems to corrupt my save file. I can play the game with all mods working perfectly for the duration on that play session. But as soon as I save, close the game and try to come back to it later my save file is no longer able to be loaded.

This only seems to happen with the 3rd game :(. I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue and found a solution. Playing with these mods is worth it to me, so if I have to try leaving my PC running for multiple days 24/7 I'll probably try that. But I'd love to avoid doing that if I can.

I'd check that antivirus is not auto deleting files made by the game

#

Add game as exception to AV policy

Uploading a game diagnostic or application log

Upload a diagnostic/log by going to the Help menu and selecting Logs & Diagnostics. Alternatively can also click this link: https://me3tweaks.com/modmanager/protocol/uploadlog

Select an application log (typically the latest), and the game target to run a diagnostic on if this an issue in the game.

When the log has been uploaded, post the LINK to the log here.

Thank you for the response, I'll definitley look into that! I did notice that my anti-virus window did pop up more often when attempting to play. Not specifically telling me that the game was causing issues but just the general one. So that might explain it! I'll update with results.

Well game ran fine for a few days mods and all, then it crashed and now im back to square one. The problem seems worse now as the LE Launcher works fine but ME3 specifically wont launch with mods enabled. If I disable all mods that game opens but that doesn't really get me anywhere and either way it seems the save gets corrupted. This log includes the current save file (I believe it is corrupted, but I cant tell because I cant get into the game with mods enabled to check.) Any assistance provided would be appreciated. Thanks for your time

Also checked anti-virus and added ME3 to the exceptions list

I verified my game files and can now load up ME3 unfortunately the the save will not load. The game crashes back to the Launcher every time I try to load the save. The save I'm referencing should be included in the log above.

oof okay so i'm not an expert in this area, but firstly, if you verify a modded game that generally breaks things. it doens't actually restore it to a fully vanilla state because it leaves a bunch of modded files thtere. this is why we say to reset to vanilla using backups. if you don't have any, manually uninstall or delete your game completely then redownload fresh.

#

looking at your log, the first thing that i can see is that the asi bypass to allow mods to load isn't installed. so that's gonna be a big part of your issue right there.

#

oh wait this is your fully vanilla game. hmm well idk why the save won't load (could be where the save was made if it was mod-related, or if it's ME3 and you had a hair mod installed it'll crash if the hair mod isn't present anymore)

#

but you also still have an error being thrown. and you havne't reset your game to a vanilla state if you used repair.

#

i suggest manually deleting your entire game. then - since there's a question about whether your antivirus may have deleted files made by the game - and because idk what state your backup is in - i'd fully redownload the whole game from scratch. make a fresh backup. reinstall everything, making sure that the game is an execption to your AV.

#

i know that's a pain in the ass but you will then be starting from a clean position.

huh i thought it totally removed the folder. well that's kinda stupid. okay manual deletion it is then.

austere gazelle
#

maybe it does on ea app or steam (can't remember which) but I recall uninstalling only removing files it installed

#

which if you don't mod the game works fine

#

but i can't remember. maybe its changed since.

turbid wraith
#

honestly i always have a backup so i don't test that feature. but it sounds like manually deleting is the safer option.

Thank you both for taking the time!

@turbid wraith when you say having a back up are you saying making a back up copy of the entire vanilla game folder? I tried making a back up of the save but that didn't seem to help. I can definitley try that, I wasn't aware that uninstalling still left files behind.

I also noticed that the ASI loader bink2w64 was not installed but I wasn't sure if doing that would help as I read that the mod manager should install any required ASI files needed for mods on its own? Maybe I misunderstood what I read. Should I try to install that ASI loader? I saw the list of mods it is required for and I wasnt trying to use any of them in my game. All of my mods were downloaded through the Nexus. No other websites or sources.

In regards to the Hair mod issue, I did at one point have a hair mod installed through the Save editor but that was not on this exact save. I thought the save editor was contributing to the save files being corrupted so I have not touched it with this most recent attempt.

I'll take your advice into account and try to muster up the mental energy to give this another shot 🤣 I really do appriciate the time and assistance from both of you, thanks very much!

okay so, let's take this in order to keep everything tidy.

  1. i'm not talking about backing up saves, i'm talking about making a backup of the game. you don't absolutely have to have a backup but it's very strongly reocmmended because - as you've found out - often fixing problems requires full restoration and you can't use repair, etc. mod manager will create one for you. if you're going to make one, use the mod manager feature to do so because it enables other functionality within the programme (like per-file restorations and stuff).

  2. the asi loader is installed the first time you install a mod. you restored to vanilla (well - not entirely because you used repair function, but for the purposes of this point, you restored to vanilla). you then didn't install any new mods. when i said "oh no you don't have the asi installed!" i was being hasty and hadn't realised this was your attmept to revert to vanilla. if you had reinstalled any mods the asi would've been reinstalled. you can also manually install it from the tools menu. but you're probably fine not to worry about this. it should get handled for you.

  3. when you set a hairstyle into a save file, any save you make where you still have that hairstyle will be dependent on the mod. so unless you had a vanilla hairstyle when you made the specific save we're talking about, ti's likely that's why it's crashing the game for you. once the hair mod is back in place, it should load again.

I see, ok thank you very much! I'll update with results.

Manually deleted everything mass effect related that i could find from the entire computer. I then reinstalled and backed up the game through the mod manager. Same result, boot up the game with no mods to test and everythings fine. I then close the game and apply my mods ( No hair mods.) through the mod manager and the first time I load up the game with mods everything is fine. I create my save and get through the opening cut scenes to the point where I can save. I do so and if I just go back to the main menu everything seems fine. I can load the save back from the main menu with no issues. But if I completley exit the game I can no longer get it to load back up. The opening screen where you press a key to enter the game freezes every single time.

This leads me to believe that the mods are not corrupting the save files, but that something about applying the mods breaks the opening screen for the game. The only way to get that screen to work again is to verify the game files and we've already established that doesn't help because it breaks the mods. I have read online that other people have had issues with the game freezing on this screen but none of those solutions have helpped here. Unfortunately 😔

your log errored out and as such we can't see what mods are installed

#

I would test restoring just sfxgame and engine and see if that fixes it

#

the only mod that i can think that could cause this is the one that changes FOV as it stores itself into the persistent storage. But that should not break anything.

humble kernel
#

Hmm ok ill try that next, I don't have any FOV mods that I'm aware of. If I have a successful log would that show you the mods I have installed? If not I can post a list here.

Also I just want to say thank you again for the continued responses and attempts to help. I know you're taking time out of your days to talk with me so thanks very much for that. It's very kind

LE3CP installs my FOV mod

#

I would also consider disabling your AV. It shows something called 'reason cybersecurity' ?

#

i would also consider removing bink2w64 bypass from tools menu and see if that makes a difference. just uncheck the box while game is not running.

humble kernel
#

Oh...that could be it. I am using the community patch.

austere gazelle
#

it will disable some features but if AV doesn't like it that could be it

humble kernel
#

Ill try disabling AV entirely as well. I did add it to the exceptions but that doesn't seem to have helped
