The game isn't dead, it just doesn't get updates like the favorite child gtao does, I guess. There are plenty of people playing though.
I've never played much gtao so I'm just speculating, but I would guess rdo is spaced out a little more, much like the old west would be. I don't know how active the lfg channel is for PC, but the PS one seems to have people active whenever I look at it

the only real reason you'd use the bolt action over the lancaster repeater is for hunting, and the rolling block already fulfills that role

Sure, your friends will be listed in Social Club. You can wiew Social Club by pressing "Home" in game.
Moreover steam players can't use steam friends for invites. They need to use Social Club instead.
So there is no difference between Rockstar and Steam version of the game.

You will start out ranking up by buying moonshine ingredients and selling to buyers, as you go you get better stuff, recipes, and so on to better upgrade your shack

It acts as an inter-session storage. When you change sessions, you lose anything on your horse, but your wagon keeps stuff. It can only hold a certain number of carcasses / huge skins, but you can store any number of regular sized pelts in it. It's really nice for saving Legendary pelts in particular, and since you can just summon it to you wherever I like to store cougars n stuff in it so I don't have to drop what I'm doing and go back to camp all the time

Moonshine was pretty nice with the monthly bonuses, but honestly I do not bother with it otherwise. It's not the worst if you want it to be your primary source though, just not my favorite.

You can see the players in your lobby from the Free Roam menu, but players aren't marked on the map in RDO like they are in GTA. You only see players in close proximity to you.

I never use my collecter role I just collect random stuff when I find it and sell all of it at some point like yesterday I had like 40 random items and I went from 45 dollars to 530
Maybe a role like sailor where you can find treasure, fish etc. and have cannons on certain boats so you can take other ones down and take the loot they have
