Some horses are much more stable than others. Saddles and stirrups seem to have more effect on speed and endurance.

All you need to do is stand your ground when it approaches and wait for it to wander off. According to players, this occasionally doesn't work – I suppose it depends on the bear – but it's a valid tactic more often than not

@marsh dirge No, do not buy gold bars unless you want to speed up things. If you buy enough gold bars for the Quick Draw club of this month you should be able to earn them back if you finish all levels before the 1-month "season" ends. The other thing that you'd use for is to buy the Bounty Hunter role. But... you can earn gold by doing Stranger Missions and Daily Challenges without spending a penny, and with that gold you can buy the Bounty Hunter role which lets you earn even more gold... for the other roles and items.
