From what I've noticed, they're quite brave. Mine bucked me off once when I got cornered on a cliff by four wolves. That was at bonding level 1. Since he's gotten to level 4, I've put him to the test and he's passed all of them. Hasn't bucked me off for gators, wolves, cougars, or bears.

A large sale would be like, say someone is doing a trader delivery for 100/100 goods. You join them and tag along, complete it, and it should unlock the requirements for moonshiner.

For ranking up trader, yes you need to purchase it to do so.

Passed by this level-50-or-so guy with the Owiza Bear pelt on the back of my horse, he proceeds to fire explosive rounds at me and my horse. Guy stole the pelt, hid in his camp nearby, and donated it

Oh yeah, it's great. Kills most legendaries in two or three shots. Larger legendaries won't take many more if you hit them in their vital areas.

If your doing the naturalist role for trader that’s your best bet

It seems random but I have a personal hypothesis/anecdote that if you approach the revenue checkpoints while at a slow trot they seem to either let me through without checking OR it reduces the chance of them checking for long. I've only had to fight the revenue men about three or four times out of dozens and dozens of runs.
