Yes but it also depends on which weapon you are using.
I'd recommend to use the improved bow with either regular arrows, or poison arrows for anything small to medium sized, for large animals I'd go for the Varmint rifle (high velocity) and for Grizzly bears the shotgun with slugs.

Thing also noticed is that when you miss a shot, it can change the pelt condition on kill, sorta like when you shoot but dont kill the first time
