It might be a camp thing. If you’re the camp cook, it’s probably easier to have your pots and pans easily available than to tediously get them out and put them away every day. Plus, they either didn’t know or didn’t care about germs/dirt, so why the hell not nail them to a tree? Also, being in the open air would help them dry after emptying/cleaning. Just a guess.
