Okay look. The hair in BOTH of these is going the same direction because of the wind. 1911 John's is clearly edited to be shorter. Even in the full image on the bottom middle has John' short hair have that long strand to make it look more like Marston's hair texture.

The 1911 John looks actually closer than the 1899 one and the hair still looks shorter. I think Desano is right. They made John bigger/taller and that's what makes the hair look shorter.
