Cholla Springs resembles the Sonoran Desert region of Arizona, including saguaro cactus, desert scrub, and prickly pears.
The scrub desert of Río Bravo is strongly reminiscent of the Chihuahua Desert regions of New Mexico.
Gaptooth Ridge is mostly based on the transitional area between the Sonoran and Mojave Desert regions of western Arizona with its Joshua trees, tan rocks, saguaro cactus, and rugged formations, and Arizona is the only American state where both Joshua trees and saguaro cacti naturally occur. This area also has light influences from southern California and Nevada.
Hennigan's Stead resembles many parts of Texas; the central area is based on many areas in Central Texas such as Hill Country, with its dry plains, oak trees, and small hills; the bordering area with Cholla Springs is heavily based on Big Bend Country, which is more desert-like and has many canyons and ridges. Finally, the areas east of Stillwater Creek are bayous, and are based on the Gulf Coast region of Texas.
Geographically, New Austin seems to correspond with Arizona, New Mexico, and western Texas; from an in-game geography perspective, as well as clues from the terrain in out-of-bounds areas, it seems that areas representing central and eastern Texas exist in between New Austin (and its Mexican neighbor, Nuevo Paraiso) and Lemoyne.

The western part Diez Coronas has formations which are directly based on Monument Valley in Arizona and Utah, with some influence from the Sierra del Carmen. The eastern side of the region, on the other hand, is more lush and forested, and is reminiscent of Coahuila.
Perdido is based on the Chihuahuan Desert areas of Chihuahua, with some influence from the Canyonlands of Utah.
Punta Orgullo is influenced by the Sonoran Desert areas of Baja California and Sonora.
The entire region is surrounded by some mountain ranges, likely being based on the Sierra Madre Occidental.```

The Great Plains region is based on the real-life Great Plains region of the central United States. This physiogeographic region encompasses parts of states including Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming. Great Plains itself does not seem to be based on a specific real-life location, and is likely a generalized frontier area. 
Tall Trees is visually based on the Big Trees State Park and its surrounding areas along the Pacific Coast of California, especially with its sequoia trees; Tall Trees also bears a resemblance to the Carson National Forest in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in New Mexico.```

Overall, despite mixing many elements, it can be argued that West Elizabeth’s geographical placement can roughly correspond with California and Colorado, considering most of Big Valley being based off of Colorado, and the real-life Great Plains also being partially located in eastern Colorado, and Tall Trees mainly based off of California.
Because there is an overlap area that links the original map with new areas of Red Dead Redemption 2, West Elizabeth is one of the most geographically diverse states in the series. In all, its terrain broadly reflects numerous characteristics that can be found across many real-life states west of the Mississippi River, from the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains to the redwood forests of northern California. In turn, West Elizabeth’s people reflect everything from eastern city and riverboat-based societies to mountain fur trade and forestry cultures. ```

Scarlett Meadows is heavily reminiscent of the regions of Northern and Central Louisiana, especially those surrounding the Red River. The red clay soil, forests, small rivers and ponds, and rolling hills would be commonly found in this region of Louisiana, as well as the rest of the Dixie (Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia).
Bayou Nwa is directly based on the various bayous and swamps in lower Louisiana, including Saint Denis being a stand-in for New Orleans.
Bluewater Marsh is more akin to coastal Louisiana bordering the Gulf of Mexico and the Mississippi River, including the marshes and wetlands in this region.
The Lannahechee River serves as the game's version of the Mississippi River, whereas the Kamassa River seems to be based on the Ouachita River.```
