Umm, just so that I'm not leading you into overgeneralizing things...
There are different sizes of animals. For a deer, bow and varmint rifle will work fine. For a tiny animal like a squirrel, you'll need to use a bow with a small game arrow; even regular arrows would damage the skin. For a large animal like a bear, varmint rifle likely can't oneshot kill it, and a regular rifle would work better.
You can use "show info" on the animal or read the compendium to learn what weapon works best for what animal. If you can find a copy of the game's official guide book, there's some info on that too.
