I'm on my 3rd playthrough of RDR2, and for the first time, I stopped right before the final mission of chapter 2, and I'm doing all of the stuff I can do before being forced to continue the story. And I'm doing chores around camp, and playing the games, which I usually don't do. And two things happened that I had not experienced before. (Neither of these things are story spoilers.) Dutch randomly said to me while I walked by, "You're going to betray me, too. You're the type." My jaw dropped. And then in one of those random sit down and talk moments, Arthur confessed that he'd been killing animals for no reason, and killing innocent people because he's so angry at how the world is changing. I don't care what faults this game has, it has such amazing writing and character development, and I doubt I'll ever play something quite like it ever again.

I think that's only partly true, because even here in Chapter 2, I was walking by Dutch in camp and he randomly said to me in one of those moments where they say stuff, "You're going to betray me, Arthur. You're that type." Even on the way to the first O'Driscoll camp after coming out of Colter, Arthur was questioning Dutch's revenge motives, throwing his own teaching back in Dutch's face. I think Arthur was a problem in Dutch's eyes well before chapter 4. I think it just becomes painfully obvious at later points.

I don't think so. I think it wouldn't have been enough money, because Dutch never wanted Tahiti. He wanted the life. He's like a mother who has no purpose without the kids, so he keeps creating situations where they need him. It was never going to be over for him. Which is why we find him doing another version of the same thing in RDR1 when John finds him at his camp at the end.

He had nothing without his crew. If everyone had their money and rode off into the sunset to new lives, he would have sat down in the road a lost man, because he is nothing without someone to save/teach/lead. He needed conflicts to make them need him.
