Those X to Y in less than Z challenges aren't so bad as long as you map out the shortest route and ride fast but careful. The biggest challenge to those is avoiding water and not falling off the horse for some reason (obstacle, person, etc.).

So, when you start out, first thing you need to do is Study a Animal. Then read the Info that comes up, that will tell you how to get a Clean Kill. Clean Kills are how you don't Damage the Pelt.

You can take your time, BUT, you can NOT miss, and you can NOT kill anything that is NOT considered 'Small Game' between the kills (Deer, humans, etc)
Also, it has to be one hit kills. If the first shot doesn't kill it, the count will reset...
Hence, Dead Eye.

I camped just southeast of of the cave in roanoke valley (just south of the road on the other side of the river). Then I loaded up my varmit rifle, took TurboSquared across and up to the cave, hopped off, tapped caps to see if any rats are there, tapped enter again to disable that, then aimed, and tapped caps again to enable dead-eye. (yeah, I know that second caps isn't needed; I'm a bit obsessive about the little light being off)
