springfield rifle-deers, foxes, and basically anything big

and bow + small game arrows - squirrels, snakes and other tiny animals

you can study the animal and it will tell you what you need to kill it cleanly with

big game: bison, moose, gator, grizzly bear - sniper rifle or improved arrows
medium game: pronghorn, deer, wolf, coyote, fox, etc - regular rifle with high velocity/express ammo, sniper rifle, or arrows
small game: rabbits, skunk, badger, possum, snake, etc - varmint rifle
even smaller game: squirrels, small birds, rats, etc - small game arrows

but pretty much any horse can probably handle a cougar once you figure out how they work

Honestly, I loved RDR1, and had a ton of fun with it, but RDR2 is so damned tedious, repetitive, and drawn out that I still have yet to actually finish the game. It's something I'm noticing more, and more with games these days, we went from "Press A to [X]" to these drawn out animations that turn the game into a series of mini cutscenes that just pull me out of the action. Is John's "I dropped some change" style looting animation perfectly realistic to loot bodies? No, but I don't want to spend 20 minutes looting the bodies after a five minute shootout, and the only way it should take that long is if there's dozens of bodies, not 10, or 15. Honestly, it's something that I've noticed Rockstar (among other companies) do more often, where they sacrifice fun on the altar of realism. It's why I have trouble believing that GTA VI will actually stand the test ofntime beyond it's launch date hype, especially with the already announced realism additions.
