No, you can make different choices, get reinforced equipment, get different horses, outfits, weapons and customize them in a unique way, go hunting or fishing for money, quests or items, there are A LOT of things you can do to do each playthrough differently, the 100% is a pain in the ass for a reason

Maybe you'll be unfazed or completely afflicted by the ending, I hope that you will realize the pure philosophy, meaning and tragedy that this game portrays

Go to emerald station and try to make sure there's only one person there so you only have one opponent, it's easier that way. If there are more than that you can try to throw your lassoo near them and they will get up and walk away

Try to get rid of your doubles first, because they can be a pain later. Keep an eye on a board and see which numbers appear on it most, and also prioritise getting rid of those numbers or you won't be able to get rid of them later.
The point system works like however many numbers the loser has left over once you win, is how many points you get. Which is why you will also want to get rid of high numbers when you can, because if you lose and still have a lot of high numbers your opponent will get more points

Finally did that stupid kill and skin 5 cougars with a bow challenge. Just ran on the road to the right of the trapper in west Elizabeth, killed a cougar, fast travelled to tumbleweed, killed a cougar north of tumbleweed, slept for 20 hours 3 times, and then repeated the process.

go to a spot and if there are no birds, save and reload

ive never had an alligator eat them on me but i imagine you could just swap to your rifle real quick and kill the gator
