Small Game arrows target specific animals, a varmit rifle isnt always the option.

That includes improved arrows and poison arrows.

Well that was cool. I just greeted some dude in Rhodes, he was all surly so I got up his face intending to train up my health a bit. He started it. Then his buddies jumped in too. I was surrounded, and then Lo! and Behold! The SHERIFF of Rhodes actually came out and shot them for me! 🤯

I did try. I tried taking it out right before going in the door, then putting on mask as I was going through door and it put it away for me. Then while I had the mask on inside, the merchant kept telling me to take it off, and I tried taking out the pistol and it simply would not activate at all (from the Tab menu . . . same here. The story is fine and all, but I really enjoy sand box games more than anything else. I must've played about 5000 hours of Skyrim before I even advanced to the equivalent of Chapter 2 in that "Main Quest" in that game 🤣 Rockstar did a truly amazing job with environments, but then they decided to cause time to pass really fast and also to always nudge (if not force) the player to stick to a narrow cinematic path. It always struck me as a damn shame, but then I guess they had their reasons for leaving the singleplayer experience a bit deficient . . .

but i have a special affinity with RDR2, in the 80's and 90's I spent a lot of time on the road and exploring in the wild in the U.S., rockstar made an amazing job at building this world, all the animals actually use the real life calls they make, lots of small details that reflect reality. So I've ended up in places in the wild in game that are near identical to places where I have spent time in the wild long ago.

Things like walking in Big Valley as the sun comes up surrounded by lavender, with the morning fog and hearing the fluting of an elk in the distance, I have been in those exact situations.

they just did that so well.

there's only a few things they got wrong but i assume that it's to not make things too easy.

The main mistake(s) to me can be summed up in a few words: "not enough optional play modes."

for example, skunks run like a bat out of hell when they see you, in reality skunks don't do that, they're pretty mellow as they trust their defense system.

i guess they caould have made a free roam mode without having to do the 1st chapter, but then doing the 1st chapter does teach you a lot of stuff

The suits at Rockstar probably thought they were crafty by virtue of constraining play modes in single player and redirecting that toward their micro-transaction platform, but I suspect they left a lot of money on the table. I doubt that the gamers nor the creators at Rockstar chose to do it this way, more like the "suits." That would be my hunch. Any time you find ham-fisted, clearly avaricious design elements which limit user options and direct users toward a "service" where they can be solicited to pay still more, that is the most likely explanation.

Thing is: they easily could have "had their cake and eaten it too."

example: until you do that Hosea mission, you cannot even visit a stable. That is fine, but it reflects a general design premise: keep the user coming back to the story, which is fine. But after all this incredibly effort and workmanship, how hard would it have been to create a secondary play mode: "Sand Box." Make it locked by default (require user profile to advance to a certain stage in the story), but also make it "unlockable" by changing simple value in a config file too (for those who don't want to wait). Get to Horseshoe Overlook and do whatever you want (within reason). Gamers love that kinda stuff and it builds community.

i have 2 horses, all the time, as i hunt a lot so i drag a 2nd horse to be able to carry more pelts and stuff

so I've had the White Arabian horse since early chapter 2 and have switched 2nd horse a few times just for the hell of it.

Miracle tonic seems to buff EVERYTHING (if it is yellow). If it is white, it does NOT seem to buff the Dead Eye BAR (though I'm speaking from memory and could be wrong).

Also, the Dead Eye Bar seems to NEVER regen no matter how big the core is, except when you sleep.

I don't doubt there is a sense to it, but I have yet to figure it out.

for me, it's the oposite, I'm tuned to my horse when hunting predators, it warns me way ahead that we're nearing one, so i know there is one nearby way before i can see the red dot on mini map. So i like it that my arabian is somewhat skittish.

here is what I came up with on that: 1. when you skin it, you get Deadeye XP, quite possibly the most important trait to develop in the game; 2. When you cook the meat you get more Deadeye XP, though because you can only carry so much you are somewhat limited there (I know the butcher will buy raw meat, not sure about the cooked, though you can donate it to Pearson); 3. Except for the cooked meat, you can sell everything to a butcher, though I'm still not sure if you get more one way or the other (need to kill two animals of same stars, carry them both back to near the butcher [which requires two horses], skin one and sell it and add that up, then sell the other one whole and compare).

So, I try to have two horses: my main horse in tow and my "Temporary Horse" as the one I ride (the game doesn't insist on taking your weapons off your back every time you mount and dismount if you ride your "temp horse")

Deadeye XP is fairly valuable. Though, if you make a bunch of Split bullets, you can grind Deadeye levels pretty quick.

@hidden moss another kinda important thing to do the game doesn't tell you is: go hunting for herbs. Try to get full inventories of every one of them (10 for most). Then when you find the pamphlets that allow you to cook different types of seasoned meat, you can carry more food than just four plain of each type (game, big game, small game, birds)

any kind of "survival" task gets you deadeye XP: skinning, cooking, crafting, etc. And killing stuff fills the Deadeye bar. The core can be filled various ways (tobacco, alcohol, sleep, tonics). So yeah: cooking all the meat you catch is smart, but it will be challenging because with the initial satchel you can only carry 4 of each type . . .thus the herbs and ability to cook the different recipes: carry four plain four oregano, four thyme, etc.)

one thing I did that made my particular playstyle (a more 'free roam' style I guess) much MUCH more pleasant is to download the files for the "ConsistentTime" mod

That mod allows you to adjust it however you want really. You could literally make the time-compression in the game equal to real time. I'm going with something like "one in-game day takes 3 real hours" (if you were to play it all awake, if you sleep at night then 1.5 + a couple minutes for the sleep time compression).

Pretty easy mod> basically just download and unzip the archive, drop a couple files in the game's main directory. There is a text file you can change a couple values on to get the experience you want. Seems to work fine. There are a couple of missions that it can screw up because the missions are timed, but you can turn off the mod with a keystroke so probably not a big problem

The default time-compression is something like "one in-game day takes 45 minutes real time" and that includes the night-time!

So it is stupid fast.

The sheep yard at Valentine is a decent place to passive-aggressive your way into some fist fights. Go around greeting guys; eventually you'll find some asshole who takes offense at being greeted <-- that is the one who needs an ass whoopin! It is far enough away from town that even in Chapter 2 when your gang mates are still at the saloon they won't come and murder everyone. No one seems to intervene, and you can just keep circulating building honor and occasionally health.

Best I could suggest is to search on reddit or the internet in general. Try to use something like Google Advanced Search so you can focus in your search more precisely. See if you can find any hold posts that discuss specific symptoms you are experiencing. There may be some kinda boot leg fix.

@cunning quartz Find your steam folder, then find rdr2 folder, find the executable to run th game, right click it and choose ''run as administrator'', don't start it within Steam

go to c:\program files\rockstar games\launcher\launcher.exe and right click it and choose ''run as administrator

easiest way is the wagon that is parked by the fence, jump the fence, jump on wagon and just ride like hell, don't even need to shoot anyone in most cases

I try to always have two saves for the current stage I'm at: one that is the "permanent" (whether it is beginning, middle or end of the mission), one that is current. Just periodically overwrite the current . . .

Then when you advance to a new mission: overwrite the "permanent" as the new "permanent" for the new mission, and then immediately create a new slot for the "temporary for the new mission. This way: every mission (or roughly) has one save permanently saved and current status has two: last permanent and current current.

One thing Rockstart did incredibly well: is environments and emergent scenarios. Don't want to spoil but just had this brilliant attempted ambush that I thwarted

They obviously intended the game to be played in a slow, soft-touch manner, even though they set the time-compression at a scale more appropriate for a platformer or dungeon shooter!

Fixing the time-compression does ABSOLUTE WONDERS for this game.
