So, how exactly does hunting work in this game? What I mean is I've NEVER understood the pelt qualities. From what I understand, the more holes you put in the animal, the worse the hide is, but I single shot everything I kill and I still get poor hides

If you study an animal and hold L2 when it's in your view, next to it's name, there should be some kinds of "stars" next to them. Getting a bad kill by using the wrong weapon or shooting it too many times will get you a poor pelt no matter how many stars. A good pelt can be obtained by either getting a good/clean kill on a 2 star animal, or by slightly messing up a kill on a 3 star animal. You can get a perfect pelt by getting a clean kill on a 3 star animal by getting a good shot or using the right tool and weapon.

The only animals that always have the same pelt are legendary animals, since their pelt will Always be legendary. Makes killing them a lot easier since you can just take explosive ammo or spam them with a repeater in dead eye, of course tracking down those animals and not getting killed by the hostile legendary animals makes it hard

After searching I've found some people who have had the same problem say that it is caused by clearing the Gaptooth Breach hideout before doing the bounty.

granted i was 9 years old and my dad had it on ps3

Nice, I played it a bit on my series x before selling it, and after playing both games, I noticed some downgrades in rdr2

Like the opening of both games, 1 was more interesting

John marston getting shot and doing some cool missions with miss mcfarlane like hunting horses

While in rdr2, it starts with boring missions in snow and all about massacres

Also horse riding was more fun rdr1, the was a button in rdr1 which allowed you to keep up with the rest of group while in rdr2 this didn’t exist

Or in rdr1, horses had gears for running, but in rdr2 it’s just shift button

Every meat has a Kcal value, 25, 50, 75, 100. You can know this by the amount of core they fill, for example, Big game meat fills core full, meaning it has 100 kcal value.

Every before-black-outs, 75 kcal will be burnt naturally from your body. They will all be absorbed once you did something that requires a black out (sleeping, building a tent, fast travel, etc.).
If you're in PERFECT weight, you just need to eat one 75 meat before black outs.

My personal diet in-game:
(1) Game Meat (from rabbits) before doing a mission, sleeping, or fast travel.

Don't exceed over 75 every before blackouts, they will add up and make you go from PERFECT to AVERAGE.

If you keep consumed 3 big meat (1 per before blackouts), the remaining 25 will add up, and you will end up with 25 more weight
