#is windows 11 necessary?
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Depends on your hardware, games, and what else you might want to do on the pc
Please list relevant info
@calm hemlock I’m going with 9850x3d and a 5080 as for games I basically just want to build a better oversized version of my ps5 with a web browser if that makes any sense so rdrd2, cod, etc.
since games like cod have an anticheat you will need windows. You can get a cheap activation key online if you don't feel like paying 140 USD on a key sold by microsoft.
you can actually mimic an activation with a command line in CMD
you wont get customer support from windows (although these guys usually make things worse anyway) but otherwise it will act like its activated windows, no watermark or anything
i personally don't trust random scripts from the internet, so that's why i activated mine with an actual key
reminds me of the usual dilemma
i generally keep trying other OS' and if I like it I keep it
well, if you want to run cod there is windows and mac, nothing else
macos won't work since he is building a pc, and you cant install macos on non apple hardware
not if you want it to be reliable
exactly
If you wanna play current games that aren't mobile crap you either have a console or windows.
Sure you can theoretically use Linux but it's just gonna be a pain in the ass. Drivers, support etc.
Windows is also literally free now you can download it straight from Microsoft. And the key cost probably not even $20 if you wanna activate it.
u could get windows 11 entripise LTSC which stands for Long term servicing channel, basically windows 11 with no pre intalled softwares, no ads and better stability, u can buy the cd key from trusted resellers
Drivers on anything but the bleeding edge (something that came out in the last like 6 months) and to a lesser extent, nvidia, are almost always perfect, better than windows even.
On any particular game, the first source is protondb. Most steam games that don’t use anticheat work just fine on Linux
But since OP wants to play cod, windows is the only option
I'm tempted to install that on my PC if it's as good as I think it is
Look I hate Microsoft and what they've done with windows as much as the next guy but encouraging someone whos more casual to use Linux for gaming is an awful idea
You're doing a disservice
it is expensive if u buy directly from microsoft, so recommend u buying from trusted resselers cuz microsoft sells them for arounf 200usd, the last time i checked
You mean encouraging someone who’s more casual to use Linux for gaming?
Well frankly I don't buy any Microsoft keys from Microsoft so makes sense
Yup that was a typo
Cool. When was the last time you looked at Linux gaming? It’s improved a lot even in the last couple years
I’m also specifying that you must check your particular games to see how they run.
But either way, cod has rootkit anticheat so windows is a requirement
Like 2 days ago lol. And this might seem like a strange concept but asking a casual gamer to check if their game will run prior to installing a computer operating system is kind of an insane thing to ask of a normal person.
The game you'll play will also change over time and will have updates too
I know it's improved a lot
But Linux isn't casual ready yet not even close. For gaming its also not their yet.
In some circumstances it can be like the steam deck or whenever the steam machine comes out that'll be fine for the normal and casual person and gamer.
You mean casual ready for non-gaming? Most people that just use a word processor and a browser would be straight up better off with Linux. After learning libreoffice write which is also straight up better than word (sidebars ftw), Linux would be awesome for many people
If by Linux you mean chromeOS then yes otherwise no lol. Watch them accidently delete their os. Or install an update or application.
Linux is still a tinkers OS.
Awesome or not people just wouldn't do well switching. Even smart people.
You can prefer libre office but that also doesn't make much sense. For free word processing Google docs is the go to and it has the best storage and collaboration. For professional use its always word.
Linux doesn’t let you accidentally delete your os
And there are Linux distros that keep you out of the terminal, if you want, for almost everything, certainly installing an app or updating your system
Ok you’ve got no other option though, as in no option except windows. Maybe try windows 10 but be really careful about security. I still do it for my 2023 laptop (such a ripoff worst performance-price you’ve ever heard of - straight from microsoft)
careful about security raises some grey flags but idk which stack we might pick next year
