#A770 or should I wait for B770?

For context: This is for a laptop GPU dongle, I will mainly use it for graphical editing and CAD (Affinity Photo & Designer, Davinci Resolve, Onshape, Unity editor) and also for AV1 video encoding.

I'm considering buying a GPU in the first place because I feel my laptop's 7840HS internal GPU is laggy for the above applications.

I occasionally play games but this is not a priority. I'm also not considering running AI inference since I have a dedicated server for that.

idk, B580 and A770 seems very similar on paper:

  • similar price (A770 slightly cheaper -18%)
  • similar 3dmark (marginal difference)
  • A770 wins on VRAM & hardware stats

I want to know if there are any benefits to having a B580 instead of A770 for being newer?

Slightly better drives perhaps

The A series have fucking awful driver implementation. It’s Intels first outing. Do not buy an A GPU.

Got an B580 myself and am happy, so i can speak for that

Okay bad news for anyone reading this thread in the future:

Intel GPUs does not work with thunderbolt 4 GPU dongles at all, probably due to its higher bandwidth requirement...

  • Window renders fine
  • Design softwares are laggy on this eGPU
  • There's no way to tell which programs are running on which gpu, except if the program itself display it (by contrast, Nvidia has a tray icon that shows you which programs are running on the eGPU)
  • Test some games (Minecraft + Sodium) gives me only 25fps, which is worse than my 7840HS integrated GPU.
  • Runs fine on a Zen 3 desktop (412fps for Minecraft)
  • If you unplug your USB cable or it disconnects, Windows instantly BSOD

So I decide to give up and swapped for a 2060 instead 😭

In a BIOS you could set ithe pcie slot from 5.0 to 4, 3 etc.

I just had a 750W server CSPS PSU sitting around so just used that

#

downside it's loud AF under heavy load... I need to replace its fans some day

haughty sonnet
#

I would worry more about the lifespan of that PSU

#

From my experience most server PSUs are somehow trash, while most user grade ones can last a decade no problem

slow quartz
#

but tbf it's cheap anyways, so I don't mind replacing it if it fails

#

a Huawei 750W CSPS PSU sells for CN¥45 on taobao, that's US$6.3

Thats nothing
