#2 drives with errors back to back in a 6-drive array

I have 6x Seagate Exos X20 18TB drives in a raid z2 hooked up to an LSI 9201-8i. These drives are manufacture refurbished and purchased (exactly to the day) 2 years ago. Last week one drive, sdg, showed a sudden 659 uncorrectable sectors. The pool was resilvered successfully earlier today. Now, i just received another ping that sdf has 294 uncorrectable sectors.

What would cause two drives to fail so closely together after no issues at all? The rest of the array shows zero reallocated sectors and zero uncorrectable sectors. The serial numbers aren't that close together either (ZVTAZWEQ and ZVTAZVSV).

My only thought is that my HBA is dying but I don't see how that can cause uncorrectable sectors? Thought those were strictly hardware/platter failures.

Seagate is known to have issues

But I would first try and reseat it all then I'd you have a spare cable change it.

It could have been any number of factors, but with the HBA being a pass-through card I'd be less concerned with it, though firmware may play a part.. I can't speak to your RAID solution, I'm not familiar with the software, but if there are software updates I'd look into those. For the drives, again I'd recommend looking into available firmware updates.

Remember, whenever you're looking at software or firmware updates, you should review all updates from the version you're running to the current release.

Presumably your software RAID will have logs? Review those.

In my experience, when issues like this occur, the cause of the issue is often a single drive, and the other drive that has issues contains parity data for that drive. When data is written incorrectly to a drive, parity data will also be bad. So the bad drive will attempt to read data, fail, attempt to rebuild from parity, realise it's bad, then both drives have SMART counters that increase because the uncorrectable error is flagged on both drives, because technically the drives couldn't read data from themselves.
