#PC upgrade to modernise on a budget

My current pc has the following:

  • Ryzen 5 1600 (Archaic ik)
  • GTX 1660 Super
  • 16gb 2666 ddr4 (4x4gb)
  • MSI B450M PRO VDH (not the max)
  • Corsair CX 550M
  • 256GB SATA SSD for boot drive, 2TB 7200 HDD for games

I use a 1080p 144hz screen for gaming and another 1080p 60hz as a second screen

With windows 10 support coming to an end and most new games being horrendously optimised I've decided that its time to do an upgrade, I mostly use the pc for gaming and uni work so the focus is on gaming performance.

I want to spend the least amount possible but I also understand that spending a bit more can make a worthwhile difference and im not opposed to it. For now my idea was to spend around £200-£400 (I'm in the UK)

My current idea was to get a 2TB SSD (Crucial P3 plus £100 on Amazon) so I can move most of my games onto an SSD rather than old HDDs,
Get a Ryzen 5 5600x (£110 on Amazon)

Other than that idk where the money would be best spent and I'm interested to see what the ppl on here think would be worth upgrading/ if my ideas were worth it. I ideally want to be able to play new games like Battlefield 6 etc at reasonable framerates and im guessing it might also be worth getting a used GPU but idk what would be an upgrade worth the cost.

Looking for any advice and happy to provide more details
Thanks

is that gonna make more of a difference than getting the 5600x and spending £200 on a used GPU tho ?

#

like i can get a rtx 3060 ti for £200

Don’t get a 3060ti

#

Actually 200 pounds ain’t bad

For cpu you’re looking at a 5700x3d. It’s the most cost effective upgrade

plucky marsh
#

Really?

#

What’s the pricing in the uk?

twin surge
#

About £220 give or take

#

No idea where you’re getting a 3060ti from, maybe cex second hand? But yeah £220 on amazon mate for it and in gaming it’s basically as good as a 7500f/7600x

#

It’s not worth paying another few hundred quid when you can get that cpu

mint orchid
#

yh I did look at the 5700x3d but on the website for the motherboard showing compatible cpu's it says it needs the "beta" bios which had me a lil concerned

#

but also my main question ig is would the 5700x3d with a 1660 super perform better than a 5700x and a 3060ti??

#

i would have thought the latter would be better

#

i havent really been following pc parts over the last couple years as much as i used to and ik that supposedly alot of new games are cpu heavy

mint orchid
#

just a few

#

or speaking of CEX they gotta 3070 for £220

#

and a B580 for £220 as well

#

but idk how good cex is at testing and all that

#

then again ebay is random ppl so idk

twin surge
#

Cex do their own 3 year warranty

#

Great for a used card

mint orchid
#

ok cex over ebay fs then

#

but still

#

5700x and a 3070 or 5700x3d and a 1660 super which is gonna perform better?

plucky marsh
#

The 5700x and a 3070 is going to preform way way better

#

Honestly even a 5600x will work perfectly fine with the 3070

#

You could even push a used 5500 if you really wanted to save money

#

I’d go with a 5700x and 3070 for the best balance

#

If you just buy a 5700x3d the GPU bottleneck will be insane and you will not be happy in the performance

#

You might even be able to run some titles at 1440p

twin surge
#

You wanna get the extra £20 for a much better gaming cpu

#

Leave it another week or month and raise the cash to get the best cpu you can currently buy on the platform, unless you go 5800x3d used and the best gpu you can get

I got a tip. Reuse your case and gpu. Replace your gpu later, that shit is expensive.
Thats how i did in the beginning of this year. Spend 3k on the main components. Saved up a few more months in order to buy a gpu (without being absolutely economically ruined)

ok from what ppl have said i think in gonna buy a ryzen 7 5700x (£120) and a 2tb SSD (£100) right now then get either a b580 or a 3070 in a couple weeks with my next paycheck,

#

Not the 5700x3d for 2 reasons A - idk about having to use the beta bios rather than the newest full release one, and B - its £220 vs £120 for the non-3d

#

Last and final questions

#
  1. Do I need to upgrade the psu now or can i do it later when i upgrade the GPU in like a month
#
  1. Any recomendations on lowish profile air coolers that are cheap cus the new cpu aint come with one and the one i got now is just the old stock tiny one
twin surge
#

On sale for £20 instead of £30 right now

plucky marsh
#

Or get one from Thermalright. They are cheap and amazing
