#Advice on building Home Server

You really think so?. Am just getting into the whole having my own server after years of watching ltt vids, one of my concerns is will 8 core be enough for my testing new things and stuff? And if I wanna upgrade will I have to purchase new everything or I can just upgrade parts?
unless you are transcoding even a n100 is overkill for most
Bruh fr... Yeah the bot for angry for something... Wait lemme try again...
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X
Motherboard: MSI B550-A PRO (supports up to 128GB RAM)
RAM: Starting with 1x32GB DDR4 3200MHz, plan to expand to 128GB
Storage: SSDs for cache/boot, HDDs for mass storage (planning ZFS)
GPU: Still deciding, mainly for light LLM and media decode
Case + PSU: Not finalized, open to suggestions
OS: Planning to use TrueNAS SCALE
And this is what I wanna do.
NAS with ZFS and snapshots
Media server (Jellyfin or Plex, 4K support if possible)
Home Assistant (smart home automation)
Local DNS and DHCP (so I don’t have to set hosts files manually across devices) — thinking of running a router stack in a VM
LLM playground (running small models like TinyLlama, Mistral)
A Linux VM for general experimentation and testing
a a310 can do 4 4k streams ez pz
only thing there that needs cpu would be the linux VM
the rest are light af
but with a LLM what i plan on doing myself even is getting some used 3060
ofc 12GB version
i suspect those parts are ones you already own?
Nope... Imma start fresh
12100 NOT F can be a good move
I went Ryzen for their unofficial ecc support...
Am a blue team guy but the ecc was the only fact made me choose Ryzen
the only issue is that its not really ecc support
it claims to be it but it does not offer the kinda ecc people want
also been running non ecc for the past year with zero issues
i am going to say it, ECC is only worth it for xeons and epycs
What? What do you mean
Planning to upgrade to 128GB? Do you think you’ll need that much? Also, imo, a hypervisor like proxmox would be better for a do-it-all home server than truenas scale, especially with a gpu
Yeah I’ve also been running it for a couple years without issue
That's a really good insight...
I can my end goal is bigger than what I can do with proxmox, am a software and AI engineer, I wanna get my hands dirty with servers...
Now am a little thrown off. Went Ryzen just for the ecc support, should I still go with Ryzen? One reason why I think I can stick with Ryzen is it's cheaper than intel and not as power hungry as intel. Thoughts? What cpu will you guys recommend?
Big boy want performance get the threadripper big boy big pocket big performance
You can't say anything
Small boy small performance get the i9 14900k or Ryzen 9 9950X3D
For gpu go with dual RTX 5090
You do not even want a GPU in your pc
It's just for my work, doesn't mean I don't know anything about pc
Get out of here
Yeah right... Dude if your the guy who thinks everyone needs a gpu then get out too
Cuz fun fact I do work that's cpu heavy
Not gpu intensive
Well what
You just need to stop the cap bro,not everyone is into gaming
Gaming is the smallest use case for a GPU
I do programming ok? I need multithreading more than anything
There we have it
So that's why I don't wanna waste money for gpu
Not fully a waste but yes for that there is no major benefit to having a GPU
See? Now you get MY specific work case
Anyhow do not go into other people threads and just be annoying
100$ laptop could be just as good
Well
Ok fine maybe not fully
Up to how much you need to compile
I aint,I am a pc nerd aswell,just cuz I don't want a gpu doesn't mean I know no shit
Hell nah
Anyways get out of his thread
Nope
I am tryna help
Your not the only one
Anyways
Look if your running LLM you need both GPU AND NPU
No
He did mention Large LLM so I'm thinking 200B+
For that atleast 30 TFLOPS would be necessary
Hell nah
Get out of here

This thing is on fire
Intel Core Ultra 7 265KF(with NPU)
192GB RAM DDR5-5600
2TB 990 PRO SSD
32 TB HDD
5070 TI 16GB VRAM
1200W PSU

Part List - Intel Core Ultra 7 265KF, GeForce RTX 5070 Ti
Cry about it
No quick sync??
I mean, this is the best i could find for sub 2500
He does not have 2500???
How much is his budget tho
not 2500
This is exactly why you need to get out of here because you’re only cluttering up the thread
Your name says all about you Creep
Explain
I ain't even talking to you and your crying like a karen
???
Let's say 800 min... Can go upto 1000...
I mean that won't let you run more than 2 displays considering the price of pc is a 5070 ti
what???
Let's not being gpu into the mix right away. I want a solid base first which I can upgrade down the line...
I considered all the things. My mentality is, if I see something I'll wanna try it and my interest is getting into the server area and I want my first server to be a good sport that can support my needs
rixx is a troll my guy
Can we ban them somehow?
Yeah try it,bet I broke a rule or two
Guys 🫠🥹 I just want an idea on what parts I should pick.
Could just do tbh any cpu with like a 3060 12GB and just enjoy
