PC keeps randomly crashing when playing games, all of a sudden my displays will just go black and my VGA light will come on. The only way I fix it is by fully turning my PC off and then booting it again. I am not sure if this is an power related issue or if my GPU is faulty or what could cause this.

After some testing it dosen't always happen at the same time, sometimes I can play for 20 mins and other times I can play for like 2 hours. If there is any troubleshooting I could do to see what is causing this that would be greatly appreciated for the help!

Do you have Nvidia GPU? Is it new occurrence that started happening?

grim coral
#

it is new, ever since my PC had another issue where it would randomly crash and wouldnt boot me into windows

tight crater
#

Does it crash in all games or just some? For example it doesn't crash when your play older less GPU demanding games or something like Hearts of Iron?

Go to C:\Windows\Minidump and check if you have any minidump files. If you do, go back to the Windows folder and copy the Minidump folder itself to the Downloads folder (You can use the desktop if you don't have OneDrive syncing files). Zip the copied folder and attach it to a post. Please follow the instructions to the letter as Windows doesn't like you messing with files in this location.

added a screenshot so you can see the other crash issue'

#

this is a new type of crash so im hoping I can figure out what hardware is the issue, I downgraded my graphic card drivers to a older stable version but that did nothing

#

either power supply or GPU

grim coral
#

New issue is that sometimes my PC will crash like I explained above in the post, and the displays go dark but my GPU fans start spinning at max speed

#

its like a 50/50 chance, the crash is the same but sometimes the fans will spin max speed and sometimes it'll just go dark and the fans wont be going crazy

What gpu? And what driver version?

grim coral
#

Driver version 24.10.1 (from 2024-10-11)

#

I downgraded today to that

#

I was running latest version

#

both drivers dont change anything

#

there was a third driver I tried but that didnt change anything either

nimble hamlet
#

Have you ran DDU?

#

Step 1, download the gpu driver for your gpu.

Step 2, download DDU (https://www.guru3d.com/download/display-driver-uninstaller-download/), and extract it to your desktop into its own folder.

Step 3, disconnect from the internet entirelly.

Step 4, boot into safe mode.

Step 5, run ddu. Keep all options at default. Select the gpu driver (intel, nvidia, amd) then click, "clean and restart" the recomended option.

Step 6, when pc boots, install that gpu driver you downloaded prior.

Step 7, after the gpu driver installs, hook back to the internet.

# grim coral It crashes in higher demanding games, like when I play roblox for example it wil...

Had similar issue recently. Everything seemed to point to the GPU but the actual culprit was RAM. For whatever reason the system became unstable after a year of functioning and the solution was to disable RAM overclock profile and leave it at the default speed, because anything higher than default caused instability. Tried to replace the RAM, updating bios and everything and even went as far as completely replacing the board and leaving only the CPU, still crashed.

Try setting RAM to default speed without overclock and get back to us.

I am not experienced in over clocking ram so I am not fully sure

#

the ram I have is rated at 3200mhz and that’s what it’s running at

#

but Xmp is running to reach that speed, otherwise my ram is running 2133

#

i’ll definitely give it a try tomorrow, unfortunately I gatta work so I have to wait to see if that’s the result

#

If the ram is the issue, buying new ram would fix the issue correct? or is it a more in depth issue

Do you think the RAM could also be responsible for causing my PC to crash and loop “advanced options” when trying to boot my PC?

grim coral
#

it’s such a confusing situation, I’m gonna hope it’s the ram when I test it out tomorrow because buying a new GPU or power supply definitely costs a lot more

#

literally every google search or anybody i’ve asked everybody has said it’s something else

#

first person said it’s the power supply, second said it was a driver issue, microsoft support themselves told me it was most likely hardware issue like 😭😭😭😭😭

I don’t know if this info helps, it seems to crash when it loads a ton of assets.

I play a game called star citizen, for a little context it’s a space game in case you didn’t know. Whenever I travel to a new planet and I arrive there’s a little freeze (probably means it’s loading the planet) and a few seconds later after the freeze is usually when it crashes. When I am in the same place or playing games that don’t load that many assets it dosent crash

#

maybe that has something to do with it, or i’m just saying useless thoughts

I would do a fresh install of windows, install bare minimum (drivers and start citizen) and try with that

@grim coral Screenshot the Details tab from one of those Kernel-Power events (Event ID 41 in case you get 6008 as well, 6008 is useless).

Right, take a screenshot of the details tab.

im assuming this

heres the system section if thats useful

After a bunch of checks, I noticed that my System 5v is always running at 4.9 max and hitting 4.8 when playing games, after about an hour of monitoring and constant crashes i’ve never seen it go above 5v even when I checked in the bios

#

could this be an possible issue?

#

12v and 3.3v were all fine and performed as i presume normal

# grim coral

It's not bluescreening at least, it's just shutting down.

#

If it was the GPU, it's not uncommon for the screen to go black during the BSOD because the GPU has crashed

#

It could still be the GPU, but I just wanted to check for BSODs because then we would have logs

grim coral
# trail elk It's not bluescreening at least, it's just shutting down.

at this point at the spot I am right now there’s nothing else I can do besides to just start replacing parts and seeing what works and what doesn’t, gonna order a new power supply today and try that out, if they dosent work then it’s either the GPU, CPU, or motherboard but who knows

#

I tested a different ram kit out last night and it still crashed so I know it’s not that at least

#

it’s just so annoying because this type of crash gives me literally no info, I don’t get a bluescreen so I don’t get a crash dump, event viewer only reports when I turn my PC off myself but dosent notice anything else

#

these symptoms literally could be any component, if the GPU is failing it could randomly crash, if the power supply was failing it could randomly crash, if the CPU was failing it could randomly crash or like I had before refuse to boot up windows but only boot in safe mode but would work perfectly fine if I unplugged my PC and drained all extra power from it

#

not sure why it randomly stopped crashing that way and now only giving me black screens

#

I did test a new GPU out last night and it didn’t crash but i’m worried that maybe it wasn’t drawing enough power from the power supply since it was only a 1660 super, it only has a 8 or 6 pin connector I can’t remember but while my main GPU 6950xt has 2x8 pin connectors

tight crater
grim coral
#

I had a idea maybe it was the cable but I don’t have a spare to test it out, I think I have another one from a different power supply but I just know that’s gonna break everything without even googling it

tight crater
grim coral
#

I know for sure it’s NOT the Ram, SSD, and now the power supply

#

it’s either the motherboard, CPU or the most likely case GPU

#

do you or anybody who reads this have any suggestions?

tight crater
#

I don´t see the model of your CPU. Does it have included graphics? If so, have you tried running purely on the integrated GPU? (dedicated removed)

grim coral
#

unless i’m slow

tight crater
#

If it crashed even on integrated graphics, you would known whether the dedicated one is faulty or not

nimble hamlet
#

Yup, its why almost always going forward, soend the $10 more getting a cpu with integrated graphics.

But yes, if the system still crashes using the igpu, then you know your dgpu is fine. And then most likely its the cpu being faulty.

Most of these support threads are gpu related. And one of the first thing we suggest, is swapping out a gpu to see if the issues persist.

grim coral
# nimble hamlet Yup, its why almost always going forward, soend the $10 more getting a cpu with ...

going forward my plan is to save up for a new GPU, if it’s fixed then issue solved, if it’s not i’m still getting rid of this AMD gpu because there are so many issues with drivers and new game compatibility it’s insane.

Since I am already upgrading my GPU I’ll probably upgrade to AM5 even through I wanted to wait for AM6 but is there a CPU you recommend that works good with the 5070 ti? people say a x3d cpu is good like the Ryzen 7 7800x3d.

nimble hamlet
#

Just about anything works good with the 7800x3d

#

If you are playing at 1080p its the best cpu next to the latest x3d cpus

#

As far as the 5070ti, I mean .... depending where you live, its sometimes a 50 dollar difference from the 5080 to 5070ti. At that point you might as well get that. But I still hate these inflated ass prices.

# tight crater Careful with the Nvidia, you might go from not optimal to awful since their driv...

ever since I owned the 6950xt it’s been nothing but issues, constant headaches with the drivers and the software would sometimes glitch out and do weird things. Sometimes Adrenaline simply just won’t open or it’ll clip things even though all key binds and clipping is disabled, worst of all is that if i made changes to the gpu such as fan speed it would just undo itself when restarting my pc

#

And yes i turned off fast boot to see it fixed the setting being undone

grim coral
#

whoever is reading this, I tried putting the GPU in the second PCIE slot and all I got was a VGA light and it didnt post (it was on and the fans were spinning), assuming it’s some type of bios issues maybe?

nimble hamlet
#

You should be using the first pcie slot
