I’m trying to install gtg 1660 super in an hp prodesk 600 g1 sff and I’m having some trouble with power supply. I bought a thermaltake smart 700W psu to power the gpu and I plan on using the stock psu to power everything else since the connectors are old and don’t match the ones from the thermaltake. I currently have the power pins shorted using some spare wire I had. They are shorted so that the psu thinks it’s plugged into the motherboard and supplies power to the gpu. Is there anything else I should do before powering the system on?

I got the pc turned on but the graphics card isn’t being recognized

i just realized you want to use 2 psus

#

that requires an amount of jankness i never did

#

sorry cant help

Darn

the smart rgb IS A KNOWN BOMB

#

oof its just the smart

#

well that one too is a BIG bomb too

#

also you need a cooler

#

also mixing 2 PSUs is VERY bad especially when one is 12VO

Ok but why isn’t my gpu being seen by my motherboard

barren heath
#

omfg you are not even shorting the right pins

#

also the cpu needs to be cooled

gritty rock
#

Dw, it’s cooled now

barren heath
#

its not

barren heath
#

huh maybe but i did the one to the right as i got a jump starter like a actual one where you do not need to guess and that is where it is on it

Tbfh using a 700w psu just to power a 120w PSU is a problem in itself

I don’t know electrics and PSUs, although wouldn’t it simply be easier to find out what powers the pins on your old ass system and swap the connectors?

#

Or if you want to be just as janky use a molex to PCIe cable with existing PSU?

barren heath

#

and i do know electrics and a bit about PSUs

#

first of all everything should have grounding

gritty rock
barren heath
#

its not

gritty rock
#

The other one is the stock

barren heath
#

the motherboard NEEDS to be in the case anyways

gritty rock
#

Hold on

#

Which psu are you talking about?

barren heath
#

the bomb 700

gritty rock
#

Yeah

#

I got that one today. The box said 700W

but i would not do over 5w with it

gritty rock
#

Why?

gritty rock

So?

barren heath
#

IT CAN BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN

gritty rock
#

Will it explode?

barren heath
#

IT CAN YES

gritty rock
#

Show proof

oblique swift
#

Well.. you’re already creating a configuration that’s unsafe

#

I don’t think you need any more evidence

#

What even possessed you to try this on something so old before even opening up the tower and looking at the proprietary motherboard and PSU connections?

barren heath
#

xd the smart 600w did not even manage to do LTT labs testing

#

there are no good 80+ white power supplies i know of anyways

oblique swift
#

Like you had 2 options. Learn how to safely do connector swaps or contact hp or whoever and see if they can sell you a psu that would work

barren heath
#

they would not

oblique swift
#

Well 3 options. Don’t do it in the first place and get a new pc when you got more money

barren heath
#

also i think that is a 4th gen chip or something

oblique swift
#

Yeah it will be 4th gen

#

The king of overclocking gen is that one

barren heath
#

put the shit back into the case, then sell that pc then buy some used ultra cheap am4 thing

gritty rock
#

I think the only stock parts are the motherboard and psu

barren heath
#

cooler

oblique swift
#

That tiny cooler master cooler is so bad it had to come with the PC

gritty rock
#

Sure

barren heath
#

also again you cant use the pc

#

the cooler needs something to screw into

oblique swift
#

My 4th gen cpu would burn my house down before and after the overclock. No idea how any ever ran tiny coolers on them

gritty rock
#

Anyway I gotta sleep

oblique swift
#

Turn the pc off and take the plug out the wall first

gritty rock
#

I’m gonna cut the mounts off of the case and just screw the motherboard into those like nuts

#

I plan on making a case out of some cardboard I have laying around, you have a list of parts I could use to make the pc itself better? Links would be super useful

barren heath
#

DO NOT build out from some proprietary shit box

oblique swift
#

I don’t often say this. I like DIY, creativity all that jazz. However you sir… should not do this. When you say “screw the motherboard into those nuts” which I hope you are referring to the standoff screws.. it shows the knowledge you have is not yet good enough to achieve what you want. More so, you’re probably going to kill the board or some other component and take more of your own time and expense in the process. Research it first, heavily, before you do for a first time

It works
