#Audio Issues...

I have recently encountered an audio issue that for the life of me I can't figure out.
Whenever I use my mic it's like there is a limiter and/or noise reduction on when all my enhancements are turned off.
All my drivers are updated as well.

When I don't talk it drops out the audio so you can hear the background noise which is why I believe there is a noise reduction on somewhere.
When I get too loud my voice cuts out which I believe would be a limiter.

Everything else works perfectly fine video and music plays just fine.
It seem to be just the mic and when I use OBS it seems to limit the audio on my Capture Card to where I can't even get audio from it.
I don't have the best capture card but everything has been working fine for weeks until Tuesday.

Nothing has change on my setup and again everything including drivers are up to date. No enhancements are on in the Sound settings.
I have even tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers and still no change.

I run Windows 11 and do have a low end laptop I am using, but it's only about a year old.

I have included a video below of my latest stream asking for help so maybe some can listen to it and that would help.

Any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

@deep crypt Which mic and do you use an audio interface?

#

And just to clarify, the issue is that it's seems like the mic is low volume and boosted (So it's not low volume in the recording, but it's distorted/not clear)?

# tulip crypt And just to clarify, the issue is that it's seems like the mic is low volume and...

I used a basic Turtle Beach headset with no audio interface. If you mean my audio driver its Cirrus Logic High Definition.
I have no audio enhancements or filters on in Windows or in OBS.
All other audio is fine besides my mic and Capture Card.

It's not that the audio is low I dont think, it's seem like the is a limiter on cutting out my voice if I talk to loud, It normally didn't do that.

Also, it seems like there is a noise reduction or something on. When I stop talking it just drops out any background noise quickly.
When it does that my level show right before it drops out the level goes up to like -30db and then drops out until I talk again.

Once I start talking again, it will sometimes cut off the first word I say like it's popping on out of mute.

I hope that helps I know it's hard to explain audio. I can always make a video of my audio level and stuff if it would help.
And everything worked fine up and never did this up until Tuesday. Friday it was fine. I don't think anything changed or updated since.

I have the most basic equipment so I expect problems but this makes no sense to me. I am open to just about any suggestions though.

#

@tulip crypt If you would like to compare to when it did work this is from Friday when the audio worked correctly.
Please don't ban me I swear this isn't promotion only the best way for me to figure this out.

The only other thing is affects besides my mic is my Capture Card, it limits the audio so bad it won't even play. Which is the only reason I care about it so much.
Sorry I know I am long winded and thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Also, do you have a model number for the laptop? I'm seeing some posts about being able to disable it and use a different audio card. And this is on computers like Dell, not something you would expect to have multiple audio devices.

Just an example

Yeah that's what I thought it sounded like but my mic is a reasonable distance away.

Again, I use cheap stuff. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 15 3520.

#

I wouldn't care too much about my mic but the only other thing it affect is my capture card. Everything else is good.
So I need to fix it.

#

And GPU is Intel UHD Graphics.

#

And thanks for the help @tulip crypt if you can't find a solution no worries. This was kind of a last resort for me.

#

I will admit a little of the background noise may be a house fan going but that's how I can tell it drops out when I don't talk.
Before you could just hear the background noise. Which is what I want oddly.

#

And before this started if I got too loud on mic it would distort not cut out. I would rather distort.

@deep crypt The download page has an entry for a Realtek driver. It might just be product variations, but let's check.

#

Open Device Manager. Windows key + R, enter devmgmt.msc

deep crypt
#

Ok.

tulip crypt
#

Find Sound, video and game controllers. Expand it and screenshot

Oh, Intel Smart Sound might be processing the audio. Let's try disabling that before we try nuking drivers

deep crypt
#

Both of them?

tulip crypt
#

Checking first if it has software we can just exit

#

Hmm. Not finding anything. Let's check the audio settings first then.

deep crypt
#

I don't see software for them. There are only 3 Intel things listed on my Start menu.

tulip crypt
#

Windows key + R, enter mmsys.cpl and click Ok

tulip crypt
#

I assume the headset is 3.5mm?

deep crypt
#

Yes.

tulip crypt
#

Oh, the recording tab

deep crypt
#

Ok.

#

So do I still need to disable the Intel stuff?

tulip crypt
#

Let's look at the audio ports first

#

In mmsys

deep crypt
#

Ok

#

Digital is just laptop built in mic I dont use.

tulip crypt
#

Ok, so definitely no Realtek alternative.

deep crypt
#

Ok.

tulip crypt
deep crypt
#

I did that already.

#

Still nothing.

tulip crypt
#

I'm out of ideas then.

deep crypt
#

Yeah stumping me and everyone else too, lol Thanks for trying though.

I remember Dell had MaxxAudio Pro and I think it controlled the audio side of things at one point.
Now it's not one here and I never uninstalled it. When I try to download it from Dell it takes me to a Microsoft Store version instead of software that won't let me control anything.

Could it be leftover things from MaxxAudio Pro causing it? Just a thought.

You can try the Intel Smart Sound stuff just in case it started interfering somehow. Just right click → uninstall. To have them reinstalled, just restart the PC and Windows should grab it.

#

Test audio before restarting

deep crypt
#

I'll test that out. If I t works I will let you know. Thanks again for the help I appreciate it.

Yeah no luck on disabling the Intel ones either. Again thanks for the help, I do appreciate it alot!
