im looking for a decent laptop for uni studies (maybe playing some roblox here and there on it), plus some programming using vscode, ideally 16gb of ram minimum - any recommendations? probably gonna get something second hand for cheap and dont really want to spend too much on it at all, like 400 to 700 new zealand dollars

Depends on the program. Typically, yes with some tinkering

Yeah. Even my old 2017 MacBook Pro ran Visual studio code just fine

I always recommend used Thinkpads. eBay is full of off lease ‘T’ series Thinkpads in the <$500. Linux is supported on them as well.

Exactly as Kryptonitecb says, you can find 3-4 year old laptops, usually Thinkpads, that corporate or goverment departments dispose of when replacing their notebooks. They should have the specs you want, all you have to do is find a reseller of refurbished devices, which might not be easy in NZ. Just stay away from Lenovo T14 G2, they have some 25%+ fail rate of motherboards with that specific model.
